The 16 gal Black Steel Closed Head UN Rated Drums - 1727 (MPN 1727) is a UN-coded molded packaging drum (when carrying the appropriate certification) for DOT-regulated transport of hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids.
Design
- Closed-head (bung-fitted) or open-head (snap-ring with removable cover) construction depending on the cargo type
- UN-coded variants (1H1 = closed-head plastic, 1H2 = open-head plastic) for DOT-regulated transport
- Standard volumes 5 / 15 / 30 / 55 gallons in the industrial bulk-fluid market
- Bung fittings (typically 2-inch NPT and 3/4-inch NPT) on closed-head drums for fill and vent
- UV-stabilized resin for outdoor staging and prolonged-storage applications
Use & handling
Fill via pump or gravity-line per the bulk-fluid operation. Bung-fitted closed-head drums use 2-inch NPT main bung + 3/4-inch NPT vent bung — verify torque per OEM spec (typically 20-25 ft-lb on the main bung). Open-head drums secure with a steel ring-clamp — torque the bolt to spec and verify gasket seating. UN-coded variants must match the cargo's packing group and hazard class per 49 CFR 173.
Common applications
- Industrial chemical bulk storage and transport — cleaners, lubricants, coatings, solvents
- Food-grade ingredient bulk packaging at the 30-to-55-gallon scale
- Waste-fluid collection — used oil, spent solvents, industrial wastewater
- Petroleum product bulk packaging — fuels (where local code permits), lubricants
- Agricultural fertilizer and chemistry bulk distribution
- DOT-regulated hazmat transport (when UN-certified for the specific cargo class)
Compatibility & compliance
Material compatibility determined by the container material's chemical-resistance and barrier properties against the intended contents. Verify against the OEM compatibility chart for any application beyond the standard packaging use case.
