The plastic tank market in North America rests on six material families. 4. Compatibility resources by material family

Every chemistry stored in a polyethylene, FRP, or fluoropolymer tank has a compatibility envelope tied to the material family. The full chemical compatibility database indexes 500+ chemistries with full compatibility matrices showing HDPE / XLPE / PP / PVDF / FRP vinyl ester / FRP isophthalic / 316L / 304 / carbon steel / titanium / EPDM / Viton / Buna-N rated against each chemistry at multiple concentration and temperature points.

The general material-family compatibility hierarchy: HDPE handles ambient-temperature dilute acids (sulfuric below 70%, hydrochloric below 32%, nitric below 40%), most caustics, brines, and water-treatment polymers. XLPE extends the envelope to concentrated sulfuric (up to 93% at ambient), sodium hypochlorite (12.5% at low storage temperature with UV stabilization), and hydrogen peroxide (35% at ambient). FRP vinyl ester (Derakane 411 / 441 series) takes the chemistries polyolefins cannot hold — concentrated nitric, hot caustic above 150°F, oleum, certain aromatic solvents. Polypropylene overlaps HDPE with slightly better heat tolerance (up to 180°F continuous). PVDF (Kynar) sits at the premium end for high-temperature dosing skids and fluorinated chemistries.

5. ASTM standards and material certifications

Federal and consensus standards governing plastic tank material rest on a small set of well-defined ASTM and NSF references. The specifier should treat each rule as a checklist item during tank selection.

ASTM D1998 — Standard Specification for Polyethylene Upright Storage Tanks. ASTM D1998 covers rotomolded polyethylene upright storage tanks up to 50,000 gallons. The standard specifies wall thickness as a function of specific gravity rating, hoop stress at the design fill height, resin density and melt index, and quality-control sampling. Snyder, Norwesco, Chem-Tainer, and Bushman vertical tanks all certify to D1998.

ASTM D2282 — LDPE wall reference. ASTM D2282 covers low-density polyethylene wall references; relevant for legacy product lines and for cross-reference to the modern HDPE D1998 standard.

ASTM D2285 — XLPE wall reference. The cross-linked polyethylene wall reference for XLPE rotomolded tanks aligns with the polyethylene-wall standards cited in the Snyder XLPE technical bulletin. XLPE rotomolding produces a chemically cross-linked wall that resists environmental stress cracking better than linear HDPE.

ASTM D3492 — Standard Specification for Chemical Resistance. ASTM D3492 is the reference for chemical-resistance test methods used in tank-material qualification. Manufacturer chemical-resistance charts are tested per this method or its equivalents.

ASTM D638 — Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics. The tensile-property reference for plastic resin qualification. Resin lots that fall outside the D638 envelope are rejected by the rotomolder before tank production.

ASTM D790 — Standard Test Method for Flexural Properties of Plastics. The flexural-property reference for plastic resin qualification. Used in conjunction with D638 for resin-lot acceptance testing.

NSF/ANSI 61 — Drinking Water System Components. Finished tanks for potable water must carry an NSF/ANSI 61 listing. Snyder XLPE potable-rated lines, Norwesco potable lines, and the Chem-Tainer NSF-61 listed configurations all carry current listings for finished-tank potable water service.

FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 — Olefin polymers for food-contact use. Polyethylene resins meeting 21 CFR 177.1520 qualify for food-contact tank construction. Chem-Tainer maintains an FDA-resin product line for food-contact and food-adjacent service.

6. Field handling and procurement by material

HDPE selection. Linear high-density polyethylene at 1.5 SG handles the bulk of chemical service at ambient temperature. Standard color is white for chemistry storage (UV protection through carbon-black additive packages or external coating); black for waste-oil and fuel service. Lead times two to four weeks on standard configurations.

XLPE selection. Cross-linked polyethylene at 1.9 SG raises the engineering margin for aggressive chemistries. Snyder is the dominant XLPE rotomolder in the North American market; Chem-Tainer ProChem covers the parallel product line. XLPE costs roughly 15-25% more per gallon than HDPE; the upcharge is justified by the chemistry envelope, the longer service life on aggressive chemistry, and the lower failure rate on environmental stress cracking. Lead times three to six weeks.

MDPE / HMDPE selection. Medium-density polyethylene covers the lighter-duty potable water and agricultural-chemistry segment. Norwesco horizontal leg tanks and certain Chem-Tainer agricultural product lines run MDPE. The chemistry envelope is narrower than HDPE; specifiers should verify against the manufacturer compatibility chart before committing.

FRP selection. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic with a vinyl-ester resin (Derakane 411 / 441) handles concentrated nitric, hot caustic above 150°F, oleum, and certain aromatic solvents. FRP is custom-fabricated rather than rotomolded; lead times run six to sixteen weeks. The custom-fabrication network coordinates the build with the FRP shop.

Polypropylene selection. Polypropylene offers slightly better heat tolerance than HDPE (up to 180°F continuous) and is the standard material for fume-scrubber sumps, certain CIP recirculation tanks, and dosing-skid day tanks. Custom-fabricated; lead times six to twelve weeks.

PVDF selection. PVDF (Kynar) sits at the premium end for high-temperature dosing skids and fluorinated chemistries. Cost runs five to ten times polypropylene per gallon of service. Custom-fabricated only.

Procurement cadence and pricing. Stock HDPE and XLPE configurations ship in two to six weeks. Custom FRP, polypropylene, and PVDF builds run six to sixteen weeks. Color and UV stabilization. Standard HDPE and XLPE chemical-storage tanks ship in white with a UV-stabilization additive package in the resin. Black tanks are available for fuel and waste-oil service where light exclusion is the design intent. Custom colors (red, blue, yellow, green, opaque) are available on most product lines at a 5 to 15 percent upcharge with a longer lead time; specialty UV-stabilization packages for outdoor sodium-hypochlorite service are baked into the manufacturer-published UV-stabilized configurations and should be specified by SKU rather than approximated through standard-resin substitution.

Specific gravity rating. Tank wall thickness is engineered to a specific-gravity rating (1.0, 1.35, 1.5, 1.7, 1.9, 2.2 in the standard Snyder lineup; equivalents from Norwesco and Chem-Tainer). The rule is simple: the tank SG rating must equal or exceed the specific gravity of the stored chemistry. Specifying under-rated SG voids the manufacturer warranty and accelerates wall fatigue.
