Temporary traffic control devices are selected and placed per the FHWA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Cones and drums use fluorescent orange bodies with retroreflective collars for nighttime conspicuity; retroreflective sheeting is specified to ASTM D4956 grades (engineer grade vs. high-intensity prismatic - check each listing). Selection
Match device to speed and duration: 28 in cones are the MUTCD minimum for higher-speed roadways, while 12-18 in cones suit parking and low-speed control; heavier bases hold position in wind and wake. Barricades follow MUTCD Type I / II / III by stripe area and application. Channelizer drums need adequate ballast, and rapid-wall systems interlock for pedestrian or vehicle separation.
