The 42 gallon Savannah Garden Rain Saver rain barrel in cool grey, Bushman part number 601050, collects roof runoff from a downspout for the garden, flower beds and lawn. It is 31.5 inches wide, 19.25 inches deep and 24 inches tall, with a colonial planter box shape with a self draining planter top that holds about 1 cubic foot of soil, and a flat back that sits flush against a wall.

Fittings and setup

Water comes in through a fine poly mesh screen on top that keeps out leaves, insects and small animals. The barrel has two 3/4 inch female fittings, each with a 3/4 inch brass spigot: a low one that drains the barrel and a higher one with room under it for a watering can or a five gallon bucket. A routed channel sends overflow to the front of the unit, away from the foundation. In the box: the barrel, two brass spigots, the screen and instructions.

Where it goes

Full, the barrel holds about 350 lb of water, so set it on firm, level ground, pavers or a stand, never on soft soil that can settle and tip it. Raising it a foot or so gives more pressure at the spigot and room for a watering can. Drain it and leave the spigot open before freezing weather. Rain barrels store water for outdoor use only; do not drink it.
