Why the lid matters on a septic tank
A septic tank opening is a serious fall hazard. An open or broken lid on a tank full of wastewater can trap a child or a pet in seconds, and the gas inside a septic tank can overcome a person who leans in. That is the first reason to replace a damaged lid straight away, not at the next pump-out. The second is the system itself: rainwater and groundwater running into the tank through a bad lid overloads it, pushes solids into the drain field, and shortens the field's life. The third is smell. A septic lid that does not close well lets odour out across the yard.
The 24 inch size is a working access opening: wide enough for the pumper's hose, for checking the scum and sludge layers, and for reaching the inlet and outlet baffles. Keep it accessible.
