CIP-chemical tank specification. CIP working solutions are diluted from concentrate at the chemical day tank. The day tank holds the concentrate at the as-delivered strength (typically 50% sodium hydroxide for caustic, 15% peracetic acid for PAA, 12.5% sodium hypochlorite for chlorinated sanitizer at food grade). Each concentrate has a distinct compatibility envelope: 50% sodium hydroxide pushes XLPE at 1.7 to 1.9 SG; 15% peracetic acid concentrate is aggressive on HDPE and is typically stored in cross-linked or cap-vented configurations to manage gas evolution; 12.5% sodium hypochlorite at food grade lives in UV-stabilized HDPE or XLPE with vent-line management to clear chlorine off-gas. Hot CIP service. Sodium hydroxide CIP at the rinse step typically runs at 140 to 170 degrees F. Polyethylene tanks have a published continuous-service temperature ceiling around 140 degrees F (HDPE) and 150 degrees F (XLPE) and a peak excursion ceiling around 180 degrees F. Day tanks holding cold concentrate that flows through a heat exchanger before the CIP loop are inside the polyethylene window; tanks intended to hold hot working solution above 140 degrees F should route to stainless or to FRP through the custom-fabrication network.

5. Regulatory considerations for food-and-beverage tanks

21 CFR 110 / 21 CFR 117 — Current Good Manufacturing Practice. The cGMP rule sets the umbrella requirements for food facility design, sanitation, equipment selection, and personnel hygiene. 21 CFR 117 (the Preventive Controls for Human Food rule) layers a hazard-analysis-and-risk-based-preventive-controls framework on top. 21 CFR 175-178 — Food-contact substances. Subparts B through D of 21 CFR 175 through 178 list the FDA-cleared materials for food-contact use. Olefin polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene) are governed by 21 CFR 177.1520, which sets the resin density window, extractables limits, and density-change-after-extraction tolerance for repeated-use applications. 9 CFR 318 / 9 CFR 417 — USDA-FSIS HACCP for meat and poultry. Federally inspected meat and poultry plants operate under the USDA-FSIS HACCP rule. Equipment used in direct food contact must be USDA-accepted (the Equipment Acceptance program, formerly USDA Pre-Approval). Plastic ingredient and CIP-chemical tanks that do not contact the carcass directly are outside the USDA-acceptance scope; tanks that hold brine or marinade in direct food contact require either USDA-accepted equipment or documented HACCP justification of equivalent food safety.

3-A Sanitary Standards 53-04, 63-04, 74-06. 3-A is the canonical voluntary sanitary-design standard for dairy and food processing equipment. 3-A 53-04 covers compression-type valves; 3-A 63-04 covers sanitary fittings (clamp, butt-weld, threaded); 3-A 74-06 covers sensors and instrumentation. The plastic ingredient and CIP-chemical tanks in this catalog are not 3-A stamped (3-A applies to stainless processing equipment); they sit upstream or downstream of the 3-A-stamped contact equipment.

FSMA Preventive Controls Rule (21 CFR 117 Subpart C). The FSMA preventive controls framework requires a written food safety plan covering hazard analysis, preventive controls (process, sanitation, allergen, supply-chain), monitoring, corrective action, verification, and recordkeeping. Tank selection enters the framework at the sanitation preventive-control step (CIP and clean-out-of-place protocols) and at the supply-chain step (incoming ingredient verification at the receiving tank).

6. Field handling and procurement

Resin selection by service. White rotomolded HDPE meeting 21 CFR 177.1520 is the standard for ingredient and CIP-chemical service at ambient temperature. The resin Letter of Compliance is supplied with the tank documentation on request. XLPE in white food-grade resin is available for higher-SG ingredients (saturated brine, syrup concentrates) and for CIP-chemistry concentrates that carry borderline HDPE compatibility (50% caustic, 15% peracetic acid). Stainless or sanitary FRP is the upgrade path for any service requiring 3-A acceptance, hot CIP above 140 degrees F, or aseptic-rated direct food contact.

Cleanability and sanitary fitting layout. Plastic ingredient tanks for food service should specify smooth interior finish, top-mount fittings (no penetrations through the bottom dish unless drain-and-flush is the primary discharge path), and a fill port sized for the receiving connection (typically a 4-inch or 6-inch sanitary clamp on the receiving line, adapted to a polyethylene fitting through a flanged transition). Sloped-bottom configurations (cone-bottom or sump-bottom utility tanks) clean down faster than flat-bottom designs because residual liquid drains to the discharge.

Color and stabilizer selection. White-pigment HDPE resin is the standard for food-grade tanks; the white masterbatch is specified to comply with 21 CFR 178.3297 (colorants for polymers) at the food-grade level. Black-pigment HDPE is not used for direct food contact (the carbon-black colorant carries different compliance considerations) and is reserved for non-contact process water and waste-stream service. UV-stabilized white HDPE is available for outdoor ingredient tanks where solar exposure would otherwise embrittle the polymer over a 10-year service life.

Documentation procurement. Food-safety auditors typically request three documents per tank: the resin Letter of Compliance citing 21 CFR 177.1520; the tank manufacturer Certificate of Conformance citing the build to the resin specification; and the cleaning protocol used at first commissioning to remove mold release and residual production debris.
