A 1 inch bolted fitting for chemistry that eats gaskets
The Snyder 34701109 is a 1 inch double flanged polypropylene bolted fitting with stainless steel bolts and a Viton gasket. It is the fitting you specify when the liquid in the tank would attack the EPDM gasket in a standard bulkhead fitting, or when the connection sees enough pressure or vibration that a threaded bulkhead is not trusted to stay sealed. Bolted flange versus bulkhead
A bulkhead fitting seals by squeezing a gasket between a nut and the tank wall from opposite sides, and it depends on that nut staying tight. A double flanged bolted fitting clamps the wall between two flanges drawn together by bolts spaced around the ring, so the sealing force is spread evenly and can be re-torqued after the tank has been filled and the wall has relaxed. On a tank that will be drained and refilled for years, or that carries a chemical you do not want on the floor, the bolted design is the safer connection.
Why Viton, why stainless
- Viton gasket: the fluoroelastomer holds up against acids, oxidizers and hydrocarbons that swell or harden EPDM. If your chemical is on a compatibility chart with Viton called out as the gasket, this is the fitting that matches it.
- Stainless steel bolts: the hardware sits on the outside of the tank where drips and fumes collect; plated steel rusts there within a season.
- Polypropylene body: compatible with most of what polyethylene tanks carry, and stiff enough to hold flange pressure without creeping.
Check the chemical against both the tank resin and the gasket in the chemical compatibility database; the gasket is the part that fails first when the pairing is wrong.
Fitting it to a tank
The fitting installs through a hole cut in a flat, uncurved area of the tank wall, then the flanges are drawn up evenly in a star pattern. A 1 inch port suits a drain, a metering pump suction, a recirculation return or a sight tube on tanks from a few hundred gallons up; for a main outlet on a large tank, step up in size.
