A 1 inch polypropylene threaded bulkhead fitting with an EPDM gasket
Part number 34100049 is Snyder's 1 inch threaded bulkhead fitting, moulded in polypropylene, with an EPDM gasket. It is the port that turns a plain tank wall into a connection: the body passes through a hole in the wall, the gasket seals it from the inside, and the threaded end on the outside takes your valve, hose barb or pipe. Polypropylene is the everyday material for tank fittings; it handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals. The body is about 4 inches across and 3 inches deep and the part weighs a pound. The 1 inch size is the one figure the rest of your plumbing has to match, so carry it into the valve and pipe order rather than deciding those first.

What to check before you buy
- The size. 1 inch. Match it to the valve, hose or pipe you already have.
- The liquid. Polypropylene body and EPDM gasket are both wetted. Check the liquid against both before you order, and ask us if it is not on a list you trust.
- The wall. A bulkhead fitting needs a flat area of wall at least as wide as its flange so the gasket seals all the way round. Snyder's drawing, linked on this page under Technical Drawing, gives the flange diameter and the hole size the wall needs.
- Drain time. A 1 inch outlet is the right size for a sight tube, a small drain or a feed line, and a slow drain for a large tank. If it is the main outlet, decide the drain time you need before you drill.
Installing it
Dry-fit first. Set the fitting in the hole, turn it so the outside thread points where the pipe will run, and only then tighten the nut, because a bulkhead sits in a wall that will not move afterwards. Tighten by hand plus a quarter turn with a wrench; over-tightening distorts the gasket and is the usual cause of a weep. Support the first length of pipe on its own within a foot or so of the fitting so the tank wall carries liquid, not the weight of a valve and a hose. Fill with water the first time. Keep one spare gasket on the shelf; it is the part that fails on a holiday.
