A 4 inch polypropylene bolted double flanged fitting with an EPDM gasket
Part number 34700647 is Snyder's 4 inch bolted double flanged tank fitting in polypropylene, supplied with an EPDM gasket. Where a threaded bulkhead relies on a single nut, a double flanged fitting clamps the tank wall between two flanges with bolts around the ring, and that is why it is the fitting of choice for a large opening low in a tank where the wall carries the most load. At 4 inches this is a main outlet size: fast draining, room for a full flow valve, and a bolted face on the outside to build the rest of the line from. The fitting is 9.5 inches across the flange and 5 inches deep, weighs 5 lb, and ships by UPS.

What to check before you buy
- The size. 4 inch. The valve and pipe downstream have to match, so settle this first and buy the rest to suit.
- The body and the gasket. Polypropylene handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals; EPDM is the gasket Snyder supplies with it. Check the liquid against both in our chemical compatibility guide before you order.
- The wall. A 9.5 inch flange needs a flat, continuous area of wall at least that wide, with the bolt holes clear of any rib or corner. Snyder's drawing, linked on this page under Technical Drawing, shows the flange, the hole and the bolt pattern.
- Access. Somebody has to reach the inside flange to install it. On a closed tank that means a manway big enough to work through; tell us the tank and we confirm it.
Installing it
Dry-fit the two flanges with the gasket between before you drill a single bolt hole, and turn the assembly so the outside face lines up with the pipe run. Pull the bolts up evenly in a cross pattern, a little at a time, so the gasket is squeezed flat rather than pinched on one side. Support the valve and the first length of pipe on their own; a 4 inch valve full of liquid is heavier than it looks, and the wall should carry liquid, not hardware. Fill with water the first time and look at the joint before anything else goes in.
