An 8 inch PVC bolted double flange fitting with a Viton gasket and stainless encapsulated bolts
Part number 34700639 is Snyder's 8 inch bolted double flange tank fitting in PVC, with a Viton gasket and stainless steel encapsulated bolts. A double flange fitting clamps the tank wall between two flanges with a ring of bolts, which is the right construction for the biggest openings low in a tank, where the wall carries the most load and a single nut will not do. At 8 inches this is the largest outlet most tank buyers ever specify: gravity drain of a big tank in minutes, suction for a large pump, or a transfer line between vessels. Viton is the gasket chosen when EPDM will not stand up to the liquid, and the stainless bolts are encapsulated in plastic so no bare metal touches the contents. What to check before you buy
- The size. 8 inch. An 8 inch valve and flange adapter are large, heavy items; settle the whole line before you buy the fitting.
- The liquid. PVC body, Viton gasket, stainless under the encapsulation. Check the liquid against the body and the gasket in our chemical compatibility guide, and for anything hot, remember PVC has a lower temperature limit than CPVC.
- The wall. An 8 inch opening needs a wide, flat, continuous area of wall with the bolt holes clear of any rib or corner. Snyder's drawing, linked on this page under Technical Drawing, shows the flange, the hole and the bolt pattern. Not every tank has a flat enough area for it; tell us the tank and we check.
- Access. Somebody has to reach the inside flange to install it, which means a manway big enough to work through.
Installing it
Dry-fit the two flanges with the gasket between before you drill, and turn the assembly so the outside face lines up with the pipe run. Pull the bolts up evenly in a cross pattern, a little at a time, so the gasket is squeezed flat rather than pinched. Keep a slipping wrench off the encapsulation; the plastic jacket is what keeps the liquid off the metal. An 8 inch valve full of liquid is a real weight; support it and the first length of pipe on their own so the tank wall carries liquid, not hardware. Fill with water the first time and look at the joint before anything else goes in.
