A 1 inch PVC bulkhead fitting, socket by thread, with an EPDM gasket
Part number 34200179 is Snyder's 1 inch PVC bulkhead fitting with a socket end, a threaded end and an EPDM gasket. A bulkhead fitting is the port that turns a plain tank wall into a connection: the body passes through a hole in the wall, the gasket seals it from the inside, and the end on the outside takes your pipe or valve. This one gives you a choice at the pipe: solvent-weld 1 inch PVC pipe into the socket, or thread a valve or adapter onto the threaded end. The body is black PVC, about 2 inches across, and weighs a pound. The 1 inch size is the one figure the rest of your run has to match.

What to check before you buy
- The size. 1 inch. Match it to the valve, hose or pipe you already have.
- The liquid. PVC handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals, and the EPDM gasket is wetted too, so check the liquid against both before you order. Ask us if it is not on a list you trust.
- The wall. A bulkhead fitting needs a flat area of wall at least as wide as its flange so the gasket seals all the way round. Snyder's drawing, linked on this page under Technical Drawing, gives the flange diameter and the hole size the wall needs.
- Drain time. A 1 inch outlet is a slow drain on anything but a small tank. If this is the main outlet of a large tank, ask us about a bigger port before you drill.
Installing it
Dry-fit first. Set the fitting in the hole, turn it so the outside end points where the pipe will run, and only then tighten the nut, because a bulkhead sits in a wall that will not move afterwards. Tighten by hand plus a quarter turn with a wrench; over-tightening distorts the gasket and is the usual cause of a weep. If you solvent-weld into the socket, do it after the fitting is tight and give the joint its full cure before the first fill. Support the first length of pipe on its own so the wall carries liquid, not hardware. Keep a spare gasket on the shelf.

This is a 2 lb carton, 8 by 8 by 8 inches, and it travels by UPS from Snyder's Lincoln, Nebraska plant when ordered loose.
