Where a 28 inch tank goes

Buy this shape when floor is scarce and headroom is not. Twenty-eight inches across fits between two machine bases, beside a boiler, in a closet or a narrow plant room, in the bay of a service body or against a wall without narrowing the walkway, and 69 inches of height is what makes that footprint hold 160 gallons. It goes through a standard doorway upright. Check the height first: 69 inches plus room above it to get the lid off and a hose in, measured to the lowest duct, light or header over the spot rather than to the ceiling. The lid is at head height for most people, so plan a fill line or a pump rather than buckets, and a float or a sight line for the level. A tall tank wants a level floor; a slab that falls toward a drain leans a column this tall enough to see. A rotationally moulded base bears on everything it touches and nothing else, so it needs a flat, continuous surface under the whole 28 inch circle: a slab, a solid deck or a full sheet of plywood over joists.

What to check before you buy

1. The fittings. Norwesco vertical tanks of this size normally ship with a bulkhead fitting low in the wall and a threaded vented lid on top. Call us with the part number and we will confirm the outlet size and lid on this one before it ships, so the valve you buy threads straight in.
2. The headroom. 69 inches to the top of the tank, plus the lid and the hose.
3. The surface. Flat, level and continuous under the whole base.
4. The valve. Dry-fit it so the handle swings clear of the wall before you seal the threads, and support the first length of pipe on its own so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware. Never pump out of a polyethylene tank with the top sealed; air has to get in as the level falls.
