What a 140 gallon tray is for

Containment is sized to the thing on top of it. The common rule, written into many state and local requirements, is that a containment basin holds the full volume of the largest container inside it, sometimes with a margin, so this tray suits a tank or a pair of drums whose combined contents are comfortably under 140 gallons, on a footprint that fits inside 45 by 45 inches. A chemical feed tank in a treatment room, a drum of cleaner or oil in a shop, a day tank beside a boiler and a small fertilizer tank in a barn are the usual jobs. The tray is square, so it goes in a corner or a single bay; where the arrangement is a row of containers, the longer tray linked below is the better shape. Confirm the volume rule with the authority that inspects your site before you buy, because the margin they require decides whether one container fits or two.

What to check before you buy

1. Footprint. The container's base, including feet or a pallet, must sit inside the tray with room to work round it. Measure the base, not the rated size.
2. Height. The tray adds 17 inches under whatever sits in it. Check the clearance to a shelf, a pipe or a ceiling, and the lift height of the forklift or the two people who set the container in.
3. The liquid. Polyethylene handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals; for anything aggressive, check it against the material before you order and ask us if it is not on the list. The tray is rated for liquids up to 1.5 times the weight of water.
4. Drain. An 8 inch opening is the only fitting. Nothing else comes installed; if you want a drain valve to empty rainwater from an outdoor tray, tell us and we quote a bulkhead fitting with it.

Setting it up

Put the tray on a flat, continuous floor; a tray that bridges a drain or a joint will crack under a full container. Set the container in the centre so the load is spread, and keep the tray clear of standing liquid: a basin that already holds rainwater has lost part of its capacity before the leak it was bought for. Outdoors, check it after storms and drain it. Indoors, look in it on every round, because a slow drip that fills a tray over a month is exactly the failure containment exists to catch.
