Why two compartments, and why this version

A single compartment tank lets turbulence at the inlet carry solids toward the outlet. A second compartment gives them a second place to settle, which protects the drain field and stretches the time between pump-outs. Openings and fittings

1. Manholes. Two 20 inch manholes on top, one over each compartment, so both chambers can be inspected and pumped.
2. Outlet. A 4 inch adapter with a PVC tee assembly. The tee is what keeps floating scum in the tank and sends only liquid from below the surface to the drain field.
3. Inlet. Your 4 inch building sewer connects at the inlet end; the drawing shows the inlet position and invert. Tell us if you need an inlet tee or baffle supplied with the tank.
4. The hole. The tank is 135 by 55 inches at the body and 70 inches tall. Excavate wide enough to compact bedding and backfill evenly on all sides, on a firm, level base with no rocks under the tank.
5. Cover and traffic. Norwesco's installation instructions set the maximum cover over the tank and rule out vehicle loads. Follow them, not a rule of thumb, and keep traffic off the tank for its whole life.

Installing it

Set the tank level on compacted bedding and fill it with water as you backfill, keeping the water inside roughly level with the backfill outside so the walls are never loaded from one side alone. Backfill in lifts and compact each one. Before the fittings are covered, run water through the inlet and watch the outlet tee for a clean flow and the connections for weeps. Bring the manholes to grade with risers so the lids sit just above finished ground and surface water runs away from them.
