Where it goes
A pump tank goes in the ground downstream of the septic tank, with its inlet below the septic tank's outlet so effluent flows in by gravity, and its discharge line running to the drainfield or mound. The round shell carries the soil load, and the manway comes up to grade through a riser so the pump, the floats and the alarm can be serviced from the surface. The installer beds it on compacted granular fill and backfills in lifts while filling the tank with water in step, so the wall is supported on both sides as the load goes on, and keeps vehicles off the area unless the installation is designed for traffic. Norwesco's installation instructions for this tank are the authority on bedding, backfill and burial depth; your installer follows them, not this page. At 54 inches across and 119 lb empty, two people can set it by hand, which matters on a lot a machine cannot reach.
Openings and fittings
- Manway. A 20 inch gasketed manway: wide enough to lower a submersible effluent pump and its float tree, and to get a hand in to clear a float. The gasket keeps groundwater out of the tank and odour in.
- Inlet and discharge. Norwesco's data for this tank lists no inlet or outlet fitting. The inlet is sized to the pipe from the septic tank and the discharge to the pump's outlet; tell us both and we confirm what the tank ships with and what bulkhead fittings you add. Dry-fit each one, point it where the pipe runs, then tighten by hand plus a quarter turn, because once the tank is buried nothing moves again.
- Riser. The manway needs a riser to grade on almost every site. Tell us the depth from the top of the tank to finished grade and we put the right one on the order.
