A 1.5 inch stainless steel double flanged fitting, bolted, with an EPDM gasket
Part number 34701594 is Snyder's 1.5 inch double flanged fitting in stainless steel, bolted, with an EPDM gasket. A double flanged fitting clamps the tank wall between two flanges drawn together by bolts, which gives an even seal all the way round and suits a thicker or curved wall. Stainless steel is the body material you pick when a plastic fitting is not strong enough for what hangs off it, or when the rest of the piping is metal and you want the connection at the tank to match. The flanges are about 5 inches across and 3 inches deep, and the fitting weighs 2 lb. EPDM is the general-purpose gasket for water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals.

What to check before you buy
- The size. 1.5 inch. Match it to the valve, pipe or hose on the outside, or size the whole run first with our fitting and outlet sizing decision tree.
- The liquid. Stainless steel body and EPDM gasket are the wetted parts. Stainless does well with water and most fertilizers, and some chemicals that are fine in plastic attack it, so check the liquid against the metal as carefully as against the gasket. Tell us the concentration and temperature.
- The wall. Both flanges need a flat area of wall to bear on so the gasket seals all the way round. Snyder's drawing, linked on this page under Technical Drawing, gives the flange size and the hole the wall needs.
- Access from inside. A double flanged fitting is tightened from both sides, so you need a hand or a tool on the inside flange. On a tank with a small manway, check reach before you drill.
Installing it
Dry-fit first and turn the fitting so the outside connection points where the pipe will run. Draw the bolts up a little at a time in a cross pattern so the gasket is squeezed evenly rather than pinched on one side. A steel flange will not crack the way a plastic one does, but it will crush the gasket and dish the tank wall if you keep going, so stop when the gasket is seated. Support the first length of pipe on its own so the wall carries liquid, not hardware. Fill with water the first time and check the flange for a weep before the real liquid goes in.
