It screws onto a 14 inch threaded opening, closes it against rain, dust, insects and sunlight, and lets the tank breathe through its vent as the liquid level rises and falls. It weighs 2 lb. What a vented lid protects
A tank is not a sealed vessel. Liquid going in pushes air out; liquid coming out pulls air in; a tank in the sun warms and breathes out by day, then cools and breathes in at night. A vented lid gives that air a clean path, so a tank being filled does not blow liquid out of a fitting and a tank being emptied does not pull a vacuum on its walls. It also keeps the opening covered, which keeps out rain and debris, keeps mosquitoes out of stored water, and keeps light from reaching the liquid through the top. For normal fill and draw rates with water and most stored liquids, a vented lid is enough. For fast pumping or liquids that give off fumes, ask us about a separate vent sized to the flow.
A missing lid is a bigger problem than it looks. An open tank collects leaves, insects and animals, and stored water in an open tank is no longer clean water. If the lid on your tank is cracked or gone, replace it before the next fill.
What to check before you buy
- Measure the opening. This lid is 14 inch. Measure the threaded neck on the tank rather than the old lid.
- Confirm the thread. Threads differ between makers. Give us the make and part number of your tank and we will confirm with Snyder that SII-34701243 matches.
