Chem-Tainer 94 Gallon PP Rectangular Open Top Tank

The Chem-Tainer 94-gallon rectangular open-top tank is a molded plastic rectangular tank built for straightforward water storage, where a flat-sided open-tank footprint seats against a wall, a stand, or a tight equipment room better than a round drum. Chem-Tainer lists this tank as polypropylene (PP); the catalog material attribute reads polyethylene, so if service temperature or any chemical exposure is a factor, confirm the exact resin against the spec sheet before you commit. At 94-gallon rated capacity it carries roughly 784 pounds of water when full, so the first question — "will my floor or stand hold it?" — starts there: plan the pad or platform around a full-water weight near 784 lb, not the empty shell.

Does it work for your setup?

This is an open-top rectangular tank, easy to fill from the top, dip for a level, drop in a float or a small pump, and clean out by hand. The open top makes it a vented, gravity-fill vessel rather than a sealed pressure or transport tank, so match it to atmospheric water-storage duty. Check the interior dimensions and wall detail against the technical drawing on this page before you build a stand or size an enclosure, since the rectangular body stacks into a room more predictably than a cylinder. To turn 94 gallons into real run-time or reserve, the Tank Sizing Calculator and Tank Sizing Guide walk through capacity, drawdown, and reserve so you order the right size once.

What it fits: water and reuse duty

Buyers reach for a rectangular open-top tank like this for utility water — rainwater and grey-water collection, HVAC condensate aggregation, batch holding, and general open-tank storage. If you are aggregating reclaimed water, our guide to industrial water-reuse tank topology covers quality-banded storage trains and where an open-top vessel fits the sequence. Sizing an on-site fire-water reserve? Our NFPA 22 fire-water reservoir walkthrough covers the sizing discipline. Setting it outdoors on grade? Read concrete pad sizing for above-ground polyethylene tanks before you pour, so the pad carries that 784 lb full load without settling.

The mistake to avoid

The common error on an open-top tank is treating it like a fitted, plumbed vessel. This tank ships as an open-top rectangular body with no pre-installed bulkhead fittings, so any drain, overflow, or outlet is an add-on you locate yourself against the drawing, not a factory port you assume is there. Verify wall thickness and the flat-panel bracing before you cut a low sidewall penetration, because rectangular walls flex differently than a round tank's under a full head of water.
