Where it fits in the system

Gravity does the work in a conventional septic system. When the drainfield is uphill from the house, when a mound or a drip field needs dosed delivery, or when the site drains to a treatment unit, a pump tank goes between the septic tank and the field. The 225 gallon size is a dosing tank for a household system: enough volume to collect a dose, run the pump for a few minutes, and leave reserve above the pump for the alarm float and a power outage. The design, the pump and the dose volume come from your installer and the county permit, and the county decides whether a polyethylene pump tank is accepted on your lot. The states Norwesco lists for this tank are Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee; if you are outside those, tell us the jurisdiction and we will check before you order. What to check before you buy

1. The lid. 20 inches across, on top. That is the opening the pump, the floats and the discharge pipe go through, and the opening a service tech reaches through later. Plan the riser so the lid finishes at grade; tell us the burial depth and we will confirm the riser with Norwesco.
2. The inlet and the discharge. The connections are made on site to suit the system; the installer cuts the inlet at the height the design calls for and seals the discharge and the conduit where they leave the tank. A sealed conduit matters, because sewer gas follows the wire back to the control panel if it is not.
3. Bedding and backfill. Follow Norwesco's installation instructions: a polyethylene tank is backfilled with water in it so the wall is supported as the hole closes, and in wet ground an empty tank wants to float. Your installer's anti-flotation detail is part of the job.
4. Traffic. Nothing heavier than a lawn mower crosses a buried polyethylene tank unless the installation is designed for it. Keep it out of the driveway.

Shipping and receiving

The tank ships LTL from Norwesco's Griffin, Georgia plant, 48 by 48 by 50 inches and 79 lb, under NMFC code 156600-02; it is light enough for two people to lift off a liftgate and carry to the hole. The listed price is before freight; the freight cost estimator gives the lane cost to your ZIP. If the pump, the floats and the riser are coming from us as well, put everything on one order so it arrives together. At delivery, check the part number against 43551 on the bill of lading and look over the wall and the lid seat for transit damage.
