Tank Manufacturer Comparison: Norwesco vs Snyder Industries vs Chem-Tainer vs Enduraplas - 2026 Buyer Guide

Four manufacturers dominate the rotomolded polyethylene tank market in North America: Norwesco, Snyder Industries, Chem-Tainer, and Enduraplas. The four brands together account for the majority of vertical, horizontal, cone-bottom, and double-wall plastic tanks moving through wholesale distribution. Most buyers pick on price and capacity. The result is a long tail of mismatched orders, void warranties, and avoidable replacements at year 4-7.

This guide is the engineering breakdown across the four brands at the buyer-decision points that actually matter: resin family, ASTM D1998 design hoop stress, max specific gravity, fitting standards, lid styles, warranty exclusions, lead time, and freight class. Real SKUs and current list pricing from the OneSource Plastics master catalog (9,419-product snapshot dated 2026-03-26). No marketing language carried forward, no fabricated chemistry compatibility claims.

Decision Framework: Which Brand for Which Service

Use case 1: Residential / agricultural water storage, 100-2,500 gallons

Default to Norwesco. The line is purpose-built for this duty, regional plant network gives the shortest freight lane, and the price ladder is the most competitive in this size band. Real SKUs: N-41464 100 gal Black ($393.86 list), N-41465 100 gal Green ($393.86 list), N-41861 100 gal White ($319.99 list). Step up to Enduraplas TLV series for 2,500+ gallons where the heavier wall and 5-year warranty earn the premium.

Use case 2: High-capacity vertical water, 3,000-15,000 gallons

Enduraplas TLV is the strongest fit. EP-TLV03000 3,060 gallon ($2,399.99 list) and EP-TLV10000 10,000 gallon ($12,415.99 list) are both heavy-wall, 5-year warranty, and engineered for the high hydrostatic head this size class generates. Snyder is competitive at the upper end and may freight better depending on origin.

Use case 3: Industrial chemistry (caustic, hypo, acid), 1,000-6,000 gallons

Snyder XLPE is the default. The brand wrote the playbook for industrial chemistry tanks; the resin selection and wall-thickness combinations are tightest. The 1,550-gallon double-wall XLPE (SII-5490000N42) is the canonical hypo / caustic feed tank in this catalog. Chem-Tainer XLPE is a competitive alternate where cone-bottom discharge is required.

Use case 4: Cone-bottom process / mixing

Chem-Tainer is the leader. The cone angle inventory (45-degree TC3148/3166/3177 with poly stand, plus inductor variants like TC3366JC) is the deepest in the market. Snyder offers competing cone-bottom but the SKU breadth is narrower. Norwesco and Enduraplas are not first picks here.

Use case 5: Septic / underground

Norwesco. The IAPMO single-compartment line and ribbed-wall underground SKUs are in production at multiple regional plants. Other brands have limited or no underground catalog. Reference the Below-grade tank engineering guide for installation criteria.

Use case 6: DOT 412/407 hauling

Enduraplas leads on heavy-duty hauling configurations because the heavier wall section meets DOT crash-test margins more comfortably. Norwesco hauling and applicator series remain the volume leader in agricultural sprayer applications. Snyder and Chem-Tainer both offer hauling but are not the first picks for this duty.

Use case 7: Double-wall (SPCC, secondary containment)

Snyder. SII-5740102N95703 275-gallon double-wall waste-oil ($2,299.99 list) and the larger SII-5490000N42 1,550-gallon double-wall XLPE are the canonical SKUs. Chem-Tainer offers double-wall in select sizes; Norwesco does not maintain a double-wall line; Enduraplas is limited.

Warranty Exclusions That Catch Buyers

All four brands publish similar warranty exclusion lists. The most common claim denials are:

  • Chemistry outside published compatibility list. Storing a fluid not on the manufacturer chemical compatibility chart voids the warranty even if the resin family would technically tolerate it. Always cross-reference the Chemical Compatibility Database and request manufacturer confirmation in writing for edge-case fluids.
  • Exceeding rated SG. Storing 1.7-SG fluid in a 1.5-SG-rated tank voids the warranty. The data plate is the contract.
  • Exceeding rated temperature. 110F continuous in a 100F-rated tank is a warranty exclusion even if the tank has not yet failed.
  • Field-drilled fittings. Adding a fitting after manufacture without manufacturer approval voids the warranty on the affected wall section.
  • UV exposure on non-UV-rated tanks. Indoor-rated white tanks placed outdoors will UV-chalk and may exhibit accelerated degradation. Manufacturer warranty exclusions cover this case.
  • Mechanical damage during install. Crane scratches, drop damage, or freight handling damage are typically excluded. Document the tank condition on receipt with timestamped photos.

Freight and Lead-Time Considerations

All four brands ship LTL or full-truck depending on size and quantity. The freight class for plastic tanks is typically NMFC 156000 / Class 200-300 (varies by density). Tank diameter and height determine whether a single tank fits standard LTL height (97 inches or 102 inches) or requires flatbed. Cross-reference the Tank Lead-Time and Logistics Planning guide.

Norwesco's regional plant network (CA, AR, TX, MN, NW) gives the shortest origin-to-destination distance for most US regions. Enduraplas ships from Texas; Snyder from Nebraska and additional locations; Chem-Tainer from East Coast and select regional rotomolders. The brand decision sometimes flips based on which freight lane is cheapest to your ZIP. Use the Freight Estimator before locking the brand.

Brand-Specific Fitting and Accessory Standards

Each brand uses slightly different fitting size and lid standards. Mismatched accessories cost a return shipment if not caught at order entry.

  • Lid sizes: Norwesco uses 5", 8", 16", and 22" lids depending on tank size. Snyder standardizes on 16" and 22" lids on most water tanks; chemistry SKUs use bolt-down lids. Chem-Tainer uses similar 16"/22" plus specialty cone-bottom lids. Enduraplas TLV uses 16" and 22".
  • Fitting standards: all four brands use NPT female fittings. Bulkhead-mount fittings vary by manufacturer; Norwesco uses 1.5"-3" standard, Snyder uses 1.5"-4" with chemistry tanks supporting 6" flanges, Chem-Tainer carries 1"-4", Enduraplas uses 1.5"-3" standard.
  • Vent standards: Norwesco includes integral vent on most water tanks; Snyder, Chem-Tainer, and Enduraplas often require accessory vent purchase. Chemistry tanks require chemical-rated vents (not the standard atmospheric vent shipped with water tanks).

Reference the Fitting and Bulkhead Sizing guide for design flow rates and piping geometry.

Common Buyer Mistakes

Mistake 1: Picking on price across brands without normalizing the spec

A 1,500-gallon tank from one brand at $1,400 list and another at $1,540 list may not be the same product. Wall thickness, ASTM D1998 compliance, max SG rating, and warranty length differ. Always normalize the spec sheet before comparing prices.

Mistake 2: Assuming equivalent chemistry compatibility

Brand chemistry compatibility charts overlap but are not identical. The chemistry that's approved on one brand's XLPE may be marginal on another brand's XLPE because the resin grade, antioxidant package, and wall thickness differ. Always check the manufacturer chart for the brand you're specifying.

Mistake 3: Ignoring lead time at quote stage

A $200 cheaper tank that ships in 8 weeks may cost more in opportunity cost than a $200 more expensive tank that ships in 2 weeks. Especially relevant on chemistry tanks where the project install date is anchored to plant turnaround windows.

Mistake 4: Using the cheapest cone-bottom for a viscous service

Cone angle and outlet diameter matter more than capacity for viscous fluids. A 30-degree Norwesco cone bottom may stall a viscous fluid that flows through a 45-degree Chem-Tainer at the same capacity. See the Cone-Bottom Tank Degree Selection guide.

Mistake 5: Mismatching accessories across brands

A Snyder lid does not fit a Norwesco tank. A Chem-Tainer cone stand does not fit a Snyder cone-bottom tank. Order accessories from the same brand as the tank.
