A 1250 gallon two compartment septic tank with the gaskets, tees and both manhole covers in the box

The Norwesco 1250 gallon two compartment septic tank, part number 44477, is a yellow polyethylene tank 116 inches long, 55 inches wide and 70 inches tall, weighing about 387 lb empty. Two compartments means a wall inside divides it into a settling chamber and a clarifying chamber. The part number means it arrives ready to plumb: a 4 inch gasketed PVC tee assembly at the inlet and at the outlet, the gaskets, and two covers for the 20 inch gasketed manways, one over each chamber. The pipe pushes into a gasket at each end instead of being solvent welded to an adapter. Norwesco lists the tank as IAPMO approved, and the service limit is 130 F.

Why this tank

At 1250 gallons this is the septic size for a mid-size house in most codes. A two compartment tank takes the raw flow in the first chamber, lets most of the solids drop there, and passes calmer water into the second chamber before it reaches the outlet tee, so the drainfield lasts longer, and a manhole over each chamber means both sides can be pumped. Our comparison of single compartment versus two compartment septic tanks covers the choice. On approvals, take Norwesco's IAPMO listing to the permit desk and tell us your state so we can confirm this part number is the one Norwesco lists there; Norwesco builds this shell under other part numbers for other states. Our note on Norwesco IAPMO and CSA B66 septic tank approvals explains what the listing covers. For the volume, use the tank sizing calculator and tank sizing guide.

What comes with it, and what to check

  1. Tees and gaskets. A 4 inch gasketed PVC tee assembly at the inlet and at the outlet, with the gaskets, for 4 inch drain pipe. The inlet tee turns the incoming flow down below the scum layer; the outlet tee draws from the clear zone. Keep the gaskets clean and dry until the plumber arrives.
  2. Manholes. Two 20 inch gasketed manways, both covers included. Gasketed lids keep groundwater out and septic gas in. If the lids will finish below grade, ask us for the risers that bring them to grade; tell us the burial depth and we will put them on the same order.
  3. The hole. 116 inches long and 55 inches wide, plus room around it for bedding and compaction. The 70 inch height plus the cover your code requires sets the depth, and that depth has to work with the elevation of the sewer line leaving the house.
  4. Groundwater. An empty polyethylene tank in wet ground floats. Follow Norwesco's installation instructions on bedding, backfill and filling, and never leave the tank pumped empty when the water table is high.

Shipping, receiving and setting

The tank ships LTL from the nearest of Norwesco's Owego, New York; Lancaster, Ohio; Tooele, Utah or Washougal, Washington plants, 116 by 55 by 70 inches on the truck. The listed price is before freight; the freight cost estimator gives the lane cost to your ZIP. Have a machine on site to lift it. At the tailgate, check 44477 on the bill of lading against the moulded number, count both manhole covers and both tee assemblies, and walk the shell for transit damage before you sign. Set it on the bedding Norwesco's installation instructions call for, and fill it with water as you backfill so the walls stay round; 1250 gallons of water weighs 10425 lb. Keep vehicles off the ground above it.
