The Norwesco 1500 gallon low profile two compartment septic tank, part number 43512, is a green polyethylene tank 157 inches long, 69 inches wide and 51 inches tall, weighing 544 lb. Where it goes
A 1500 gallon tank is the step up for a larger house, a house with a garbage disposal or a jetted tub, or a county whose sizing table asks for more than the common size; the local table, based on bedrooms and soil, sets the minimum. The low profile build is the version for lots with shallow bedrock, a high water table or a tight fall from the house to the drain field. What comes with it and what to check
- Inlet and outlet. Two 4 inch gasketed PVC tee assemblies, one for each end, shipped loose. The tees go in on site so the installer can confirm orientation and depth against the house drain and the field line before anything is glued. Standard 4 inch sewer pipe connects to them. - Manway. A 20 inch gasketed manway for inspection and pumping. Plan a riser to grade if the lid will be more than a few inches below finished ground, so the tank can be pumped without digging.
- Compartments. Two, divided by a moulded baffle. The first takes the inlet and the solids; the second feeds the outlet.
- Drawing. Norwesco's drawing for this tank, linked under Technical Drawing on this page, shows the inlet and outlet invert heights, the baffle position and the manway location. Give it to the installer with the permit.
Installing it
A polyethylene septic tank is light to set and depends on the backfill for its strength, so Norwesco's installation instructions, not this page, govern the bedding, the backfill material and the fill sequence. Two points are universal: the excavation bottom has to be level and free of rock so the flat bottom bears evenly across its full 157 by 69 inches, and the tank is filled with water as it is backfilled so the walls are supported from both sides. Set the tank so the inlet is the higher of the two tees and check the fall to the field before the pipe is cut. Keep vehicles off the tank area unless the design allows for traffic. Where the water table is high, your installer sizes the anti-flotation measures; an empty buried tank wants to float.
