40 Gallon Vertical Liquid Storage Tank

Floor space is the constraint, so height is the answer

An 18 inch circle is about what a drum occupies, and 42 inches of height turns it into 40 gallons. The tank stands where a squat tank of the same volume will not: a narrow strip beside a machine, the gap between a pump skid and a wall, a bay in a pump house, the end of a greenhouse row, the corner of a wash-down area, the space behind the cab on a flat deck. It passes through a door upright. The duty is a day tank on a chemical feed pump, a batch mixing vessel, make-up water, or a working reserve beside equipment. Three things follow from the height. The opening is 42 inches up, fine to reach and awkward to pour into, so the fill wants a line and a coupling rather than a hose held overhead. The tank is easy to tip at 18 lb empty and lands 500 lb on an 18 inch circle when full, so strap it to a wall, rack or frame before the first fill and check the strap after the tank has been full once. And the surface must carry the entire floor of the tank: a solid deck rather than two rails, a slab with no hollow, set level with an instrument rather than by eye, with nothing packed under one edge. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 3/4 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting low in the wall. A ball valve or a pump suction threads straight into it; support the valve so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware.
2. Top opening. A threaded opening for filling and cleaning. Norwesco's drawing, linked under Technical Drawing on this page, gives its size; confirm it with us if a float, a fill coupling or a vent fitting has to pass through it.
