165 Gallon Vertical Liquid Storage Tank

Where it goes

A 31 inch tank 56 inches tall is the working size for a plant room, a wash bay, a barn, a greenhouse or a well house, with the manway at chest height so filling, checking and cleaning need no step. The 16 inch opening is what makes it the right choice for liquids that leave residue, for a tank that will be cleaned between batches, or for a tank that takes a float, a level sensor and a fill line through the top at the same time. Thirty-one inches is wider than a standard doorway, so measure the opening it has to pass through; most double doors and every roll-up door take it upright. Full of water it puts about 1380 lb on a 31 inch circle, and a rotationally moulded base bears on everything it touches and nothing else, so it needs a flat, continuous, level surface under the whole base. What goes in it

Water, liquid fertilizer, wash water and the treatment chemicals that polyethylene handles are the normal loads. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the side wall. A 2 inch ball valve, camlock or hose adapter threads straight in. Dry-fit the valve so the handle clears the wall, seal the threads, and support the valve and the first length of pipe on their own; a 2 inch valve with a hose on it is more weight than a tank wall should carry.
2. Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top: wide enough to fill from a hose or a pump, to drop a float in, and to get a hand and a brush inside to clean. The vent lets air in as the tank drains so the walls are never pulled inward.
