A drum's footprint, a drum's volume, and a tank's fittings

Fifty gallons on an 18 inch circle is the volume of a drum on the footprint of a drum, with a proper bottom outlet and a vented lid instead of bungs. That is why it replaces drums: beside a chemical feed pump, at a wash station, as a mixing vessel for treatment solution, behind the cab of a utility truck, or as the working reserve for a piece of equipment. The height is the thing to plan around. At 53 inches the lid is chest high, so the fill wants a line and a coupling rather than a hose held up; the tank is easy to tip at 25 lb empty and carries several hundred pounds on an 18 inch circle when full, so strap it to a wall, rack or frame before the first fill; and the floor must carry the whole base, a solid deck or slab set level with nothing packed under one edge. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 3/4 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting low in the wall. A ball valve or a pump suction threads straight into it; support the valve so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware.
2. Lid. A 5 inch threaded vented lid on top. It takes a hose or a funnel comfortably but not a hand, so plan on flushing rather than scrubbing to clean this tank. The vent lets air move as the level changes; never seal it.
