Snyder Industries 8500 Gallon HDPE Vertical Liquid Storage Tank with ASTM Certification

194inches tall. Taller than a two-story ceiling.

At 194 inches the tank stands a little over 16 feet. A standard 96 inch ceiling reaches its waist. Nothing this size passes a doorway or a carport, so the pad is picked before the tank is.

70,890pounds of water when full. Water alone weighs 70,890 pounds.

Multiply 8,500 gallons by 8.34 pounds per gallon. The 1.5 specific gravity walls carry contents up to 106,335 pounds, and the 1.9 walls up to 134,691 pounds. Size the pad for the liquid you will actually store.

The eight tanks

Start with the wall. Resin sets what the tank can hold and how hot; the specific gravity rating sets how heavy a liquid the wall is built for. Pick a cell to narrow the list.

The eight tanks, and how they differ

Every tank on this page shares the mold: 120 inch diameter, 194 inch height, an 18 inch threaded vented manway, a 3 year warranty and the Lincoln, Nebraska plant. The wall is the whole decision.

The 1.5 specific gravity linear polyethylene tanks are the entry point at 2,400 pounds shipped: black at 22,479 dollars and white at 22,684 dollars before freight, both rated to 120 degrees F. The white one lists ASTM, FDA approved and ANSI/NSF 61 approved resin; the black lists FDA compliant resin and NSF 61.

Step up to crosslinked polyethylene at the same 1.5 rating and you get the 140 degree F ceiling and the impact and stress-crack resistance linear resin lacks, still 2,400 pounds shipped, black or natural white at 29,749 dollars.

The heavy duty 1.9 walls ship at 3,100 pounds. High density linear in black lists at 30,439 dollars and the white polyethylene at 30,720, both rated to 120 degrees F. The crosslinked 1.9 pair, white and black, list at 37,219 dollars and take 140 degrees F; the white one lists FDA compliant resin, the black adds NSF 61.

Water, rainwater and fire reserve at a specific gravity of 1.0 sit comfortably inside a 1.5 wall. Liquids heavier than water, hotter than 120 degrees F, or chemicals that attack linear resin are what the crosslinked 1.9 tank is built for.

What 8,500 gallons is on the ground

Taller than a two-story ceiling. At 194 inches the tank stands a little over 16 feet. A standard 96 inch ceiling reaches its waist. Nothing this size passes a doorway or a carport, so the pad is picked before the tank is.

A 10 foot circle of pad. The base is 120 inches across, a hair over 78 square feet. Snyder requires the full bottom to bear on a flat, level, compacted surface. Concrete, a leveled ring of compacted crushed rock, or a steel ring filled and screeded all work; a crowned or cupped pad does not.

Choosing by what you will store

Potable and process water

Seven of the eight list NSF/ANSI 61 and FDA compliant resin on their spec sheets. Black walls block light and keep algae down in an outdoor tank that sits full for months; white and natural walls let you read the level by eye.

Rainwater harvesting

An 8,500 gallon tank catches an inch of rain off a 13,000 square foot roof with room to spare. Pair the 18 inch manway with a screened inlet and a first-flush diverter and a black tank becomes the catchment for a shop, a barn or an irrigation block.

Fire suppression reserve

Rural sites without hydrants keep a dedicated draft tank, and 8,500 gallons covers common sprinkler reserve figures. Confirm the standard your authority having jurisdiction enforces before you order and keep the tank, the draft fitting and the pad in the submittal.

Fertilizer, brine and chemicals

Liquid fertilizers and brines run well above the density of water, which is why the 1.9 walls exist. Match the resin to the chemical, not only the weight: the chemical tank recommender checks the liquid against Snyder's own compatibility data, and the crosslinked tanks cover the aggressive end of that list.

Getting it to your site, honestly

An 8,500 gallon tank is an oversize load: 120 inches wide and 194 inches long on the trailer, which is why the freight class on these reads 300 or OVS. It travels on a flatbed, the driver does not unload it, and you need a forklift with long forks and a spreader, or a crane with soft slings, and a clear lane to the pad.

Every tank here ships from Snyder's Lincoln, Nebraska plant, so the Plains, the Midwest and Texas see the shortest lanes. Listed prices are before freight. Put your ZIP in the freight cost estimator and you get a real LTL quote for this class and weight, the same number our team sees.

The honest limitation: there is no cheap way to move 194 inches of polyethylene. If the site cannot take a flatbed and has no way to lift 3,100 pounds, two smaller tanks plumbed together can be the better answer, and we will tell you so on the phone.

Standards the manufacturer lists

ASTM D1998, Standard Specification for Polyethylene Upright Storage Tanks, is the construction standard for this mold; it governs wall thickness by specific gravity rating, hoop stress and the test schedule. Two of the eight carry Snyder's explicit ASTM listing on their spec sheets.

NSF/ANSI 61, Drinking Water System Components, is listed by Snyder on seven of the eight for the resin in contact with water. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 covers the olefin polymers themselves. We print what Snyder lists for each tank and nothing stronger; the per-tank listings are in the comparison table and on each product page.

Install day

Set the tank on the finished pad with the manway reachable from a ladder or a platform; at 194 inches you will not reach it from the ground. Leave the 18 inch threaded vented manway as the vent unless you add a dedicated one, and never seal it under a pump suction.

Pipe every fitting with a flexible connection and support the pipe independently. A full tank settles and a polyethylene wall grows in the sun; rigid pipe cracks the fitting or the wall. Keep the drawing on the job: each of the eight has its manufacturer drawing linked from its card, and the 3D model on this page is traced from that same drawing.

Questions we get about 8,500 gallon tanks

How much does an 8,500 gallon plastic tank cost?

Listed at 22,479 to 37,219 dollars before freight on this page, by resin and wall rating. Freight is quoted separately to your ZIP because an oversize flatbed load prices by lane.

8,500 or 9,500 gallons on the same footprint?

Same 120 inch pad; the 9,500 gallon mold is 215 inches tall against 194 here. If your lift and your height limit allow the extra 21 inches, the larger tank costs little more per gallon; if not, this is the one.

What is the difference between the 1.5 and 1.9 specific gravity tanks?

Wall thickness. A 1.5 rating carries liquids up to one and a half times the density of water, 1.9 up to 1.9 times. For water either works; for fertilizer, brine or dense chemicals buy the 1.9.

HDPE or XLPE?

Crosslinked polyethylene costs more and takes heat to 140 degrees F and harder chemical service; linear resin is rated to 120 degrees F and is the value choice for water. Snyder makes this mold in both.
