A 1000 gallon blue underground tank that works as a cistern or a septic tank
The Norwesco 1000 gallon multi-use underground liquid storage tank, part number 41735, is a blue polyethylene tank 102 inches long, 60 inches wide and 63 inches tall, weighing 403 lb empty. The two jobs it does
As a septic tank, 1000 gallons is the common size for a house of ordinary bedroom count where the county accepts a single compartment tank; the inlet tee turns the incoming flow down, the outlet tee draws from between the scum and the sludge, and the tank settles solids ahead of the drainfield. Norwesco lists state septic approvals for this model in AL, AK, AR, CO, CT, DE, GA, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NH, NJ, NY, NC, ND, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI and WY; the county health department issues the permit and sets the size, so call them with the part number first. As a cistern, the same tank holds a thousand gallons of well, hauled or rain water out of the light and out of the way, or serves as a buried pump tank between a slow well and the house. Openings and fittings
- Inlet and outlet. Each is a 4 inch adapter with a PVC tee assembly. For septic service, both tees go in; the inlet sits higher than the outlet. For cistern service, tell us the fill, suction and overflow you are running and we will supply the bulkhead fittings with the tank.
- Manways. Two manholes with 20 inch gasketed covers. If the lids will finish below grade, Norwesco's options for this tank are 6 inch, 15 inch and 24 inch extensions, a 25 inch riser with a 12 inch lid and a 36 inch riser with a 6 inch lid, ordered as two of each. Tell us the finished grade and we will put the right pair on the order. Setting it
Follow Norwesco's installation instructions for this tank: they set the bedding, the backfill material, the maximum cover and the order in which you fill the tank with water while backfilling so the walls are loaded evenly from both sides. Never backfill an empty polyethylene tank and never set one under a drive. Level the bedding on both axes before the tank goes in. For septic use, fit the tees, connect the pipes and fill with water to the outlet before the inspection. For cistern use, fill it the first time with clean water and check every fitting before the hole is closed.
