A 1005 gallon black vertical tank with a siphon tube outlet

This Norwesco 1005 gallon black vertical liquid storage tank, part number 44818B, is a flat bottom polyethylene tank 48 inches in diameter and 134 inches tall, weighing 219 lb empty. It comes with a 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting with a siphon tube as the outlet and a 16 inch threaded vented manway on top. The tank is rated for liquids up to 1.5 specific gravity, which covers water, most liquid fertilizers and many common chemicals; 1005 gallons of water weighs 8382 lb. The resin is FDA compliant per Norwesco, Norwesco lists the tank as NSF 61, the service limit is 120 F, and Norwesco backs it with a 3 year warranty. Black keeps light out of the contents, which slows algae in stored water and protects light sensitive liquids.

Where a thousand gallon tank on a 48 inch footprint goes

This is the tallest tank Norwesco puts on a 48 inch base: 134 inches, over eleven feet, for a full thousand gallons on the floor space of a tank half its size. It is for sites where the footprint is fixed and the sky is not: a side yard, the end wall of a barn or a high bay shop, a slot between a building and a property line, or a processing floor. The jobs are a household or farm water reserve on a slow well, rainwater from a large roof, a sprayer or fertilizer fill point, and a fire or drought reserve on a rural lot. Full of water it weighs 8382 lb on a 48 inch circle, so it needs a flat, continuous, level concrete pad or a sound slab that will not settle unevenly, never soil or gravel alone. A tank this tall must be anchored or braced to a wall, a post or a frame; empty, it is a sail. Our guide to bearing surfaces under polyethylene tanks covers what the pad has to do. For a fire reserve, reservoir sizing on remote sites and freeze protection says how much water a plan needs and what keeps it liquid.

What goes in it

Water, liquid fertilizer and the treatment and cleaning chemicals that polyethylene handles are the normal loads. Check anything else in our chemical compatibility guide first, and ask us about anything that is not listed. Liquids heavier than 1.5 times water need the heavy duty tanks linked below, and nothing hotter than 120 F belongs in it. The tank sizing calculator and tank sizing guide confirm the volume before you order.

Openings and fittings

  1. Outlet with siphon tube. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting fitted with a siphon tube. The fitting sits in the wall and the tube reaches down inside the tank, so the tank draws from near the floor through a fitting that is not at the floor; the arrangement is on Norwesco's drawing, and we will talk it through if you call. A 2 inch valve, camlock or hose adapter threads into the fitting. Support the valve and the first length of pipe on their own so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware.
  2. Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top, 134 inches up, so plan a fixed platform or a ladder to use it. It is wide enough to fill from a hose or a pump, to drop a float or a suction line through, and to reach inside to clean. The vent lets the tank breathe as the level changes.
  3. Extra fittings. An overflow near the top, a return line or a second draw-off is a bulkhead fitting through the wall. Tell us before the order and we quote it with the tank. Dry-fit, then hand tight plus a quarter turn.
  4. Drawing. Norwesco's drawing for this tank, linked under Technical Drawing on this page, gives the outlet and siphon tube arrangement and the manway position.

Shipping and receiving

The tank ships LTL at freight class 300 from Norwesco's Fairfield, Texas or Lancaster, Ohio plant, whichever is nearer. On the pallet it is 48 by 48 by 134 inches and 219 lb, and at that length it travels on its side. The listed price is before freight; the freight cost estimator gives the lane cost to your ZIP. Have two people and a clear path at the tailgate. Check the part number against 44818B on the bill of lading, look along the full length of the wall for transit scuffs or cracks, make sure the manway lid is on and turns freely, brace the tank on its pad before anything else, and fill it with water the first time so any problem shows up with something harmless in it.
