What a containment tray is for

Secondary containment is the backstop under a stored liquid: if a fitting weeps, a valve is left open or a tank fails, the tray holds the liquid instead of the floor, the drain or the ground. Fire marshals, environmental rules and insurers commonly ask for containment sized to a share of the largest container standing in it, and the rule that applies to you comes from your local authority, not from us. What we can tell you is the number this tray gives you to work with: 500 gallons of capacity in a footprint of 92 by 80 inches. Measure the tank or the group of drums you want to stand in it against the inside of the tray, not the outside, because the wall and the radius at the floor take up some of the 92 by 80 inch outline. Black polyethylene handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals, keeps light off whatever collects in the tray, and does not rust or need coating the way a steel pan does. A liquid that has to be caught also has to be removed: plan how you will pump or drain the tray after a spill, because a full tray holds 4170 lb of water and cannot be tipped.

What to check before you buy

1. The footprint. 92 by 80 inches outside. Confirm the inside dimensions on the drawing against the base of what you are standing in it, and leave room to walk around it.
2. The height. 19 inches. The tank or drums have to be lifted over that lip to go in, so plan the forklift or the ramp now. A tank filled while standing in the tray never has to be lifted again.
3. The capacity. 500 gallons. Your authority will tell you what share of the stored volume the containment has to hold; if 500 gallons is short, the 600 gallon tray below is the next step.
4. The floor. The tray wants a flat, level, continuous surface. A tray standing on a slope holds less than its rated volume before it spills over the low edge.
5. The liquid. Check it against polyethylene and keep it under 120 F and 1.5 specific gravity.

If you are buying a tank to stand in it, put both on the same order so they travel together. At the tailgate, check the part number against 42051, look along the lip and the corners for transit damage, and set the tray in its final spot before the tank goes in; moving a tray with a full tank in it is not an option.
