The Norwesco 1720 Gallon 15 Degree Cone Bottom Tank (SKU N-44337) is a 1.5 specific gravity polyethylene cone-bottom tank built for chemical batching, mixing, and full-drain processing where you need the contents to empty through the cone rather than leave a flat-bottom heel behind. It stands 78 inches tall on a 91-inch diameter footprint, holds 1,720 gallons, and the 15-degree cone discharges through the bottom outlet for clean drain-down. The 1.5 SG rating is the number that governs everything else here, so read the chemical compatibility section before you commit to a fluid.
Will it work for your application?
This is a true cone bottom tank, not a flat-bottom drum. A 15-degree cone is the shallowest angle in this lineup, so it drains liquids and light suspensions completely; for fast-settling solids or slurries that pack, step up to the 30- or 45-degree cone instead. A cone tank cannot stand on its own - it requires an engineered cone stand or skirt, and that stand and pad must be rated to the loaded weight, not the empty shell. Full of water this tank carries roughly 14,345 lb, and at its 1.5 SG rating the maximum rated contents weight is about 21,517 lb across the 91-inch base, so size your stand to carry 21,517 lb loaded. For matching this volume to your batch size and refill cadence, run the numbers through the Tank Sizing Calculator and the Tank Sizing Guide.
Chemical compatibility
This tank is polyethylene resin rated to 1.5 specific gravity. The resin is HDLPE - confirm HDLPE versus XLPE before chemical service, because resin chemistry affects which fluids the tank can hold. At 1.5 SG it is suitable for the following, with fittings and gaskets matched to the chemical: acetic acid at 60% (PP/PVC fittings, EPDM gaskets), aluminum sulfate at 50% (PVC, EPDM), calcium chloride at 40% (PVC, EPDM), ferrous sulfate at 20% (PVC, EPDM), magnesium chloride at 30% (PVC, EPDM), sodium carbonate at 30% (PVC, EPDM), urea solution at 50% (PP/PVC, EPDM), and ozonated water up to 10 PPM (PVC, EPDM). One application worth calling out: DEF at 32.5% is compatible, but it is the one fluid on this list that needs 316 stainless fittings (with EPDM gaskets) - PVC will not do. EPDM is the default gasket for everything this 1.5 SG tank can hold today. Always confirm against the OEM chemical-resistance chart for your exact concentration and operating temperature, since both shift the rating. Full details for each fluid are in our Chemical Compatibility Database.
Chemicals that need a higher-SG tank
Several common process chemicals exceed this tank's 1.5 SG rating and require a 1.9 specific gravity tank instead - do not run them in this unit. Those include ethylene glycol, ferric chloride, ferric sulfate, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, hydrofluosilicic acid, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, phosphoric acid, polyaluminum chloride, potassium carbonate, potassium hydroxide, propylene glycol, sodium bisulfate, sodium bisulfite, sodium hypochlorite, sodium thiosulfate, sulfuric acid, and zinc orthophosphate. Several of these also change the gasket: sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, phosphoric acid, and sulfuric acid call for Viton, and peracetic acid calls for Aflas - none of which you need for any fluid this 1.5 SG tank can hold. Running one of these chemicals? You need the 1.9 SG version of this cone tank - call 866-418-1777 and we will spec the right tank and fitting package. Verify resin, SG, fitting material, and gasket against the OEM chart before you order.
Freight and ordering
This tank ships LTL freight, quoted live to your ZIP from the nearest Norwesco plant - either Shawnee, OK or St. Bonifacius, MN. Because freight is rated by destination, pull your exact number from the Freight Cost Estimator before you finalize. For full dimensions, the bottom outlet, and the cone geometry, see the technical drawing on this page.
