Chemical compatibility

Compatibility always depends on concentration, temperature, fitting material, and gasket material, so match every component to the chemical you are storing and verify against the manufacturer's concentration- and temperature-specific chemical-resistance chart. The aggressive oxidizers and strong acids require a Viton gasket instead: hydrochloric acid (37%, PVC), hydrofluoric acid (48%, PP/PVC), hydrofluosilicic acid (26%, PP/PVC), hydrogen peroxide (50%, PVC), phosphoric acid (85%, PVC), and sodium hypochlorite (under 16.5%, PVC). Two services need special materials: sulfuric acid (98%) moves the fitting up to CPVC with a Viton gasket, and peracetic acid (30%) calls for 316SS fittings with an Aflas gasket. The mistake to avoid

The most common error on a 1.9 SG cone tank is matching the resin and weight but mismatching the gasket. A standard EPDM gasket on a Viton-required chemical will fail at the fitting long before the tank ever does, so spec the gasket and fitting material to the chemical, not to the tank.
