Where a 525 gallon vertical goes

This is the point where a tank stops being a buffer and becomes storage. A rural home on hauled water fills it once a week instead of every other day; a cattle or horse operation runs a float-fed trough off it and stops worrying about the pump for a day; a market garden catches one good storm from a barn roof and waters from it for a week; a contractor keeps a job supplied from one delivery. At 78 inches tall the water surface stands six and a half feet above the outlet when full, enough head to flood any pump and to gravity-feed troughs and lines well below the pad. The 46 inch base is steady, but the tank is still taller than it is wide and carries more than two tons of water when full, so strap it before the first fill wherever wind, animals or vehicles can reach it, and give it a flat, level, continuous base poured wider than the floor. The manway is above head height for most people, so plan a short step for filling from the top and for the yearly clean, and run the overflow to daylight away from the pad so a full tank never washes out its own footing. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the wall. A 2 inch valve, camlock or hose adapter threads straight in, and a 2 inch drain empties the tank quickly. Support the valve and the first length of pipe on their own so the fitting carries water, not hardware.
2. Inlet. A 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for the fill line, a float valve or the overflow.
3. Manway. A 16 inch vented manway on top: wide enough to fill from a hose or a pump, drop a float in, and get a hand and a brush inside to clean. The vent lets air in and out as the level changes; never plug it.
