A 550 gallon low profile black water tank for under a roofline
The Norwesco 550 gallon vertical water storage tank, part number 40703, is a black polyethylene tank 67 inches in diameter and only 44 inches tall, weighing 95 lb empty. It is the wide, low member of the Norwesco vertical line: the one that goes under a lean-to, a deck or a low barn eave where a taller 550 would not clear. It comes with a 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting as the outlet, a 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting as the inlet and a 16 inch threaded vented manway on top. It is rated for liquids up to 1.1 specific gravity, which makes it a water tank; 550 gallons of water weighs 4587 lb. Why buy the low one
Height is the whole argument for this tank. At 44 inches the manway is at waist height, so filling from a hose, dropping in a float and scrubbing the floor are all done standing flat on the ground. The trade is footprint: a 67 inch circle instead of something narrower, and the whole circle needs a flat, level, continuous base. The low centre of gravity is also why this shape is popular on trailers and in the back of a stock trailer for hauling water to pasture: it does not want to tip, and 4587 lb of water sits low on the axles. Openings and fittings
- Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting low in the wall. On a tank this short the outlet is close to the ground, so plan the valve and the first elbow before the tank is set; there is less room under the fitting than on a tall tank.
- Inlet. A 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for the fill line.
- Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top. The vent lets air in and out as the level changes; never plumb the tank so that the manway is the only vent and then seal it.
- Rating. 1.1 specific gravity, a maximum of 9.18 lb per gallon: water and rainwater. Most liquid fertilizers are heavier and need a tank rated 1.5 or higher. Contents stay under 120 F.
