Where it goes

A low round tank is the shape for a house, a shop or a barn where the gutter outlet is close to the ground or the tank has to stay below a window line. The 74 inch footprint needs a flat, level, continuous base: compacted gravel in a frame, pavers on sand or a concrete pad, with nothing under the tank that can settle on one side. Full, the tank holds about three tons of water, and a base that was fine when the tank was empty tilts under that load and stresses the fittings. Openings and fittings

1. Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top with a strainer basket. The basket is the first filter in the system; lift it out and empty it after a storm. The vent lets air out as the tank fills and in as it drains, so never seal it.
2. Inlet. A 3 inch access port for the downspout or the diverter outlet. Run an overflow from the tank back to the drain the downspout used to feed, sized at least as big as the inlet, so a full tank in a storm sheds water away from the foundation rather than over the lid.
3. Outlet. A 1 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, shipped with a plug. Thread a valve or a hose bib straight into it and support the first length of pipe so the fitting carries water, not hardware. A 1 inch outlet suits a hose bib or a small pump; for a bigger pump, tell us before you order.

What goes in it

Rainwater for the garden, stock, washing down and toilet flushing is what this tank is for. The tank is rated for liquids no heavier than water, so it is not the tank for fertilizer or chemicals. Where it freezes, drain the outlet pipe and valve in winter; a full pipe splits.
