Who buys a low profile single compartment tank
A single compartment tank is the simplest septic tank there is and many health departments still accept it for a house of ordinary size. The low profile version is for the sites where the standard tank will not go: the sewer line leaves the house shallow, the dig hits rock or water a few feet down, or the drainfield is high and the whole system has to stay near the surface. Before you order, confirm two things with your local health department: that a single compartment 1000 gallon tank is accepted for your bedroom count, and that a polyethylene tank is accepted in your jurisdiction. Openings and fittings
- Inlet. A 4 inch gasketed PVC tee assembly, shipped loose. The inlet tee turns the incoming flow downward so it does not stir the scum layer. The inlet sits higher than the outlet, which is what keeps the tank flowing in one direction.
- Outlet. A 4 inch gasketed PVC tee assembly, shipped loose. The outlet tee draws from below the scum and above the sludge, which is the whole point of a septic tank. If your code calls for an effluent filter in the outlet tee, tell us and we will add one.
- Manway. A 20 inch gasketed manway for inspection and pumping. If the lid will finish below grade, ask us for the riser that brings it to the surface; a lid you can find without a shovel gets pumped on time.

Setting it
Follow Norwesco's installation instructions for this tank: they set the bedding, the backfill material and the order in which you fill the tank with water while backfilling so the walls are supported from both sides. Never backfill an empty polyethylene septic tank and never set one where vehicles will drive over it. Level the bedding on both axes before the tank goes in; a tank set out of level puts the outlet invert in the wrong place relative to the inlet. Fit the tees, connect the pipes, then fill with water to the outlet before the inspector arrives.
