A 1000 gallon low profile two compartment septic tank with a side inlet
Part number 40198 is Norwesco's 1000 gallon low profile two compartment polyethylene septic tank in green, 127 inches long, 60 inches wide and 51 inches tall, weighing 370 lb empty. Low profile means a shallow hole: at 51 inches tall it goes in where rock, groundwater or a shallow sewer line keep a standard tank out. Two compartments settle solids in the first chamber and polish the effluent in the second, which is what many codes now require. The inlet is on the side rather than the end, which suits a lot where the house drain comes in from the flank, and the tees ship loose for the installer to set: a 4 inch gasket with a tee assembly at the inlet and a 20 inch gasketed manway on top. Norwesco lists the tank as IAPMO approved, lists state septic approval in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia, and backs it with a 5 year warranty. Septic tanks are permitted locally. Openings and fittings
- Side inlet. A 4 inch gasket with a tee assembly, shipped loose. It takes standard 4 inch drain pipe and drops the flow below the scum layer in the first compartment. The side position is the reason to pick this tank over the end inlet version; check the drawing against your drain line before you order.
- Outlet and loose plumbing. The tee assemblies are supplied loose and set by the installer, which lets the inverts be checked against the drain field before anything is glued. If your code requires an effluent filter at the outlet tee, tell us and we will add one.
- Manway. A 20 inch gasketed manway on top for pumping and inspection. Bring it to grade with a riser so the tank can be serviced without digging.

Setting it
Follow Norwesco's installation instructions for bedding, backfill and burial depth; they are the condition of the warranty. The usual method for a plastic septic tank is to set it level on a prepared bed, then fill it with water as the backfill goes in so the walls are supported from both sides; 1000 gallons of water is 8340 lb of ballast. Keep vehicles off the area over the tank. Where groundwater is high, ask the installer about the manufacturer's guidance on anchoring before the tank goes in.
