Where it goes

Water to a job site, a pasture or a garden plot; spray mix for a boom or a hand sprayer; wash water on a service truck; a reserve tank on a small trailer. The loaf shape is also the easiest to live with in a bed: it sits flat, it does not roll, it leaves room beside it for tools, and at 31 inches tall it rides under most ladder racks and headache racks. Polyethylene handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals. Liquids heavier than 1.5 times water, or hotter than 120 F, need a different tank.

What to check before you buy

1. The bed. Measure between the wheel wells and from the tailgate to the front of the bed. The tank needs a flat, continuous surface under its 48 by 40 inch base; a bed liner is fine, bare ribs with nothing between them and the tank are not.
2. The lid. One 8 inch threaded vented lid on top for filling and venting. It is not a manway; clean the tank through the lid with a wand.
3. The outlet. This tank ships with no outlet fitting. Tell us where you want the drain and what size, and we confirm what to add before it leaves the plant.
4. Tie-down. Two straps over the body, pulling down to the bed anchors, with the lid clear. A half full tank sloshes hardest; check the straps after the first mile with a load.
5. Payload. 1,668 lb of water plus the 80 lb tank. Check the truck's door sticker before the first full load, and remember a load that sloshes behaves differently from one that does not.
