The Norwesco 750 gallon low profile two compartment septic tank with loose plumbing, part number 44510, is a green polyethylene septic tank 92 inches long, 60 inches wide and 51 inches tall, weighing 298 lb empty, with a moulded baffle wall that splits it into a settling compartment and a clarifying compartment. It is the western build of this tank: made at Norwesco's Hanford, California plant and carrying state septic approvals for Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Low profile means the shallow height: it goes into a hole 51 inches deep plus bedding and cover, for a lot with rock, caliche, a high water table or a gravity line that cannot run deep. The inlet and the outlet are each a 4 inch gasket with tee assembly, shipped loose for the installer to fit on site, and access is through a 20 inch manway. Where this tank fits
Two compartments is what most health departments now require for a primary septic tank: solids settle in the first compartment and the second sends clearer effluent to the drain field, which is what keeps the field alive. 750 gallons is the size many jurisdictions accept for a small dwelling or a cabin; your permit sets the minimum, so confirm it before you order. What to check before you buy
- The permit. Send the model number 44510 to your health department before you order. They approve tanks by model, and the inspector will want the inlet invert, the outlet invert and the liquid depth. Ask us for Norwesco's drawing for this model with the quote.
- The hole. 92 by 60 inches at the tank, plus working room, 51 inches of tank plus bedding below and cover above. Measure the gravity line from the house to the inlet invert before the excavator arrives.
- The pipe. The inlet and outlet are 4 inch gasket and tee assemblies. Your 4 inch sewer pipe joins them on site.
- Access. The 20 inch manway is the pumping and inspection opening. If the top of the tank will sit more than a few inches below grade, plan a riser so the lid finishes at the surface; tell us the burial depth and we will quote the riser with the tank.
- Traffic. A polyethylene septic tank goes under lawn, not under a driveway. If anything heavier than a mower will cross it, say so before you order.
Setting it
Follow Norwesco's installation instructions that ship with the tank. The usual sequence is a level bed of sand or fine gravel, the tank set with the inlet end toward the house and checked level across both diagonals, the tees fitted and the pipe connected, then water added to both compartments as the backfill goes in around the tank, in lifts, so the walls are loaded evenly from both sides. Keep sharp rock and caliche lumps out of the backfill. Fill with clean water to the outlet invert before the system goes into service; 750 gallons of water weighs 6255 lb, which is why the tank is set empty and filled in the hole.
