Where a stainless tote earns its tare

A polyethylene tote is lighter and costs less, and for water, fertilizer and most common chemicals it is the right buy. Stainless wins on four kinds of job. The vessel is washed with hot water, caustic or steam and the surface has to be inspected and passed afterwards; stainless takes that for years, with no crevices where a cage meets a bottle. The product or the customer requires stainless contact surfaces, as food, beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical work often does. The tote is filled, moved, emptied and washed several times a month and a heavier vessel bought once beats a lighter one replaced repeatedly. Or the tote lives on a forklift in a plant where a plastic body would be the first thing to give. If none of those is your job, say so and we will point you at a lighter tote; if one is, the 650 lb tare is the price of it, and it is a figure to plan the forklift rating, the rack beam and the floor around before the first one lands.

At 550 gallons this is the biggest Supertainer, and it reaches that volume by standing 71.25 inches tall on the same 42 by 48 inch footprint as every other tote in the line. That makes the manway head-high: plan a step or a platform for filling, sampling and cleaning, and measure to the lowest obstruction above the final position rather than to the ceiling. Openings, fittings and cleaning

1. Manway. 22 inches, vented. Wide enough for a spray wand, a light, a sampling thief and an arm, which is what makes the tote cleanable rather than only emptiable. The vent lets air back in as the valve draws liquid out; keep it clear.
2. Inlet. A 2 inch access port on top for a closed fill line or a pump discharge. Confirm the thread form with us before buying adapters or camlocks.
3. Outlet. A 2 inch 316 stainless ball valve at the bottom, factory fitted. The valve is 316 and the body is 304; the two grades handle liquids differently, so check the liquid against both. 4. Washing. Drain fully through the valve, wash through the manway, and leave the manway open to dry before the next fill. Rinse water goes to the same drain the product would, so plan the wash station with that in mind.

Snyder lists the 550 gallon stainless Supertainer under several part numbers with the same published size and weight: 6984500B51310 and 6984500B51320.
