What a 70 gallon black tank is good for

Seventy gallons in a dark tank is a practical reserve where algae would be a nuisance: drinking water for a dog run, a coop or a few head of stock, a rinse water tank on a small wash rack, a reserve under a deck for a cabin pump, or a holding tank for a brine or a liquid fertilizer that weighs more than water. High density polyethylene handles water, most fertilizers and many common chemicals. Two limits matter on this one. The 120 F service limit applies to the liquid, and a black tank in full summer sun gets warm, so shade it on a hot site. And you cannot read the level through a black wall, so plan a sight tube, a float gauge or a marked dip stick. At 23 inches across, the footprint is about the size of a drum; at 41 inches tall it fits under a bench or a low roof.

What to check before you buy

1. Fittings. The outlet and lid on 1009000N51 are not listed on this page. Tell us the outlet size and height you need and we will confirm what comes on the tank.

3. Restraint. At 30 lb empty it blows over or tips when a hose is pulled. Strap it to a post, a wall or a frame before the first fill.
