Where a 250 gallon vertical goes

This is the size a lot of rural buyers settle on for the first real reserve: a home on hauled or well water that wants a few days of margin, a cabin or hunting camp filled by a delivery truck, a stock pen with a float-fed trough, a market garden holding rain for the beds, or a pump house where the pressure pump needs a tank to draw from. At 68 inches tall the water surface stands more than five and a half feet above the outlet when full, which floods a pump and runs a gravity line to a trough or a wash station below the tank. The manway is at the top of a five foot eight inch tank, so plan on a short step to open it. Full, the tank carries 2085 lb on a 35 inch circle, which is more than a ton on a small patch of ground: the base must be flat, level, continuous and wider than the floor, and the tank should be strapped before the first fill wherever wind, animals or vehicles can reach it. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the wall. A 2 inch valve, camlock or hose adapter threads straight in, and a 2 inch drain empties the tank quickly. Support the valve and the first length of hose so the fitting carries water, not hardware.
2. Inlet. A 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for the fill line or the overflow. Run an overflow to daylight away from the base so a full tank never washes out its own pad.
3. Manway. A 16 inch vented manway on top: wide enough to fill from a hose or a pump, drop a float in, and get a hand and a brush inside to clean. The vent lets air in and out as the level changes; never plug it.
