The Snyder Industries 1550 Gallon Captor double-wall tank is built for secondary containment where a leak from the primary tank cannot be allowed to reach the ground. It is a tank-within-a-tank: a black crosslinked linear polyethylene (XLPE) primary rated to specific gravity 1.9, held inside a second XLPE shell that captures the full volume if the inner tank is ever compromised. At 136 inches tall on a 76 x 76 inch footprint, it holds 1,550 gallons in a single vertical footprint. If you are cross-shopping XLPE double wall tanks or a black Snyder double wall tank, this is the containment-rated version of that search.

Will it work for your job?

The 1.9 specific-gravity rating is the number that matters here: the primary shell is engineered to hold liquids weighing up to 1.9 times as much as water, well above what a standard 1.0 or 1.5 SG tank carries. The key figures for your pad, anchoring, and access planning:

  • Footprint: 76.0 x 76.0 in (76 in wide x 136 in tall) - check this against door, bollard, and clear-height access before delivery.
  • Full of water: about 12,927 lb loaded.
  • Maximum rated contents: engineered to carry up to 24,561 lb. Size forklift or crane pad to the figure that matches your actual liquid, not the empty shell.

The tank comes configured with a flange, an 18-inch polyethylene threaded and vented fitting, and a manway with 15-inch access for entry and inspection of the primary. Match your vent and fill lines to that 18-inch PE threaded/vented fitting, and confirm your gasket and flange interface against the technical drawing on this page before you order pipe. If you are unsure the 1,550-gallon size fits your draw and freeboard needs, run the numbers with our Tank Sizing Calculator and the Tank Sizing Guide.

The mistake to avoid

Double-wall containment tanks live and die by freeboard and resin selection. XLPE is not the same as standard HDPE, and the crosslinked wall is what earns the 1.9 SG rating, so do not substitute a single-wall or lower-SG tank to save on freight. Just as important, do not fill a double-wall tank to the brim: the interstitial space and thermal-expansion headspace have to be respected per ASTM D1998. Our guide on Captor double-wall freeboard sizing per ASTM D1998 walks through the real volume you can actually use, and the companion piece on wall thickness at the vapor-saturated headspace explains why the vapor-saturated headspace is where these failures tend to originate and why liquid-side inspection alone misses them.

Compliance and containment context

Where a site falls under secondary-containment requirements, the double-wall design is often specified to satisfy them. Our walkthrough on Captor double-wall tanks for SPCC 40 CFR 112 compliance covers where these tanks fit that framework, and for rural fire-protection storage the fire-water reservoir design guide covers NFPA 22 sizing and cold-climate freeze protection.
