Where a wide 200 gallon tank makes sense

This is the broad, lower way to hold 200 gallons. A 40 inch circle spreads the load and keeps the centre of weight low, and at 57 inches the top stays below eye level, so you can look in, fill and service it without a ladder. That suits indoor rooms with limited headroom, spaces under a mezzanine or a pipe rack, and outdoor sites where a lower, wider tank sits steadier in the wind than a tall one.

The wall combines two features. Cross-linked polyethylene, XLPE, has its polymer chains bonded together in the mould, which gives a tougher wall that resists stress cracking better than standard polyethylene, with a 140 F service limit here. The black colour blocks light, which protects liquids that degrade in sunlight and keeps algae out of stored water. It also hides the level and warms in the sun, so plan a gauge and keep the tank shaded in hot climates.

What to check before you buy

1. Floor space. Measure for the full 40 inch circle plus room to walk around it and reach any fitting. Wide tanks are easy to put in a corner and hard to service there.
2. The base. 3,169 lb of dense liquid needs a flat, level surface that touches the whole bottom, never a frame of beams with gaps between them.
