Pump below the outlet, and a float that stops it

• Pump and suction: put the transfer or metering pump below the level of the base fitting so gravity keeps it primed, and keep the suction run short, straight and one size up from the pump port rather than long and elbowed. A tank 47 inches tall gives modest head, so a pump lifting out of the top instead of drawing from the bottom will cavitate at low level; draw from the base fitting. Fit a low level float or a dry run cutout, because a positive displacement pump run dry on a 190 gallon tank will do damage before anyone in the building hears it.

Everything downstream of the base fitting is the buyer's to get right, and the rules do not change with the fitting size. The connector between tank and hard pipe is flexible, because a rigid run bolted to a polyethylene wall pushes thermal movement and pump vibration straight back into the fitting. The first valve rides on its own support, never hung off the tank. Keep the lid shut between refills so vapor stays in and rain stays out, name the one liquid on the wall, and put a light on the band of wall above the liquid line whenever the tank is open, because that band is where a vapor-side problem shows first.
