What a tall 3450 is good for
This is the household or small farm reserve that holds a week of normal use, and a common size when a fire authority wants a private water supply on a rural lot. The height does two things for you: it keeps the footprint small, and it gives the outlet a useful head of pressure when the tank gravity feeds a trough or a garden. It also means the manway is well above head height, so plan a fixed ladder or a platform if anyone will look inside, and put the float valve on the inlet line where it can be serviced from the ground. Openings and fittings
- Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting low in the wall. Thread a 2 inch valve in and follow it with a union. Support the valve and the first run of pipe on their own; the fitting should carry water, not hardware.
- Inlet. A 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for the fill line.
- Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top for filling, level sensing and cleaning. It is the tank's vent; never seal it.
- Rating. 1.1 specific gravity, a maximum of 9.18 lb per gallon: water and rainwater. Liquid fertilizers are heavier and need a tank rated 1.5 or higher. Keep contents under 120 F.
