A 100 gallon doorway tank, 13 inches wide, supplied without a fitting

The Norwesco 100 gallon doorway water storage tank, part number 43311, is a slim white polyethylene tank 48 inches long, 13 inches wide and 43 inches tall, weighing 47 lb empty. The 13 inch width is the whole idea: it goes through a standard door, down the side of a trailer, between a wall and a workbench, or into the gap behind a shop sink where no round tank fits. This version comes without an outlet fitting, so you drill the outlet where your plumbing needs it rather than where a factory fitting puts it. It has a 5 inch lid on top. The tank is rated for water and light liquids up to 1.1 specific gravity; 100 gallons of water weighs 834 lb. The resin is FDA compliant per Norwesco and the service limit is 120 F.

Where a 13 inch wide tank goes

Doorway tanks solve a placement problem, not a volume problem. The common homes for this one are water storage in a basement or a utility room that was finished after the plumbing, rainwater storage against the wall of a greenhouse, a potable water or grey water tank in a van, a trailer or a tiny house, and a wash water tank on a service truck. Measure the gap, not the tank: 13 inches is the figure to check twice, along the whole 48 inch run rather than at one point, because a wall that bows or a skirting board that stands proud eats the clearance. The tank wants a flat, continuous surface under the full 48 inches. Full, it weighs 834 lb plus the tank, and a body this narrow and tall should be strapped or braced to the wall behind it so it cannot tip when it is drawn down unevenly. Our doorway tank sizing guide by application covers how to pick the size, and the tank sizing calculator and tank sizing guide settle the volume.

What goes in it

Water. The 1.1 rating covers water and light liquids only, and the FDA compliant resin suits drinking water storage, rainwater and wash water. Nothing heavier than that belongs in this tank. Keep the contents under 120 F. White lets you see the water level through the wall; if the tank will stand in sunlight and you want to keep algae down, the black version linked below is the better choice.

What to check before you buy

  1. The outlet. There is none. You drill the tank and install your own bulkhead fitting, which lets you put the outlet low on the end or the side where the plumbing wants it. Order the fitting with the tank, dry fit it before tightening, and use a hole saw sized to the fitting maker's instructions. If you would rather have a factory fitting, tell us and we will point you to the version that has one.
  2. The lid. A 5 inch lid on top. It fills from a hose and takes a small float valve; it is not an inspection manway, so plan on draining and flushing rather than reaching inside to clean.
  3. The space. 48 inches long, 13 inches wide, 43 inches tall, plus room above the lid to get a hose in.
  4. The drawing. Norwesco's drawing for this tank is linked on this page under Technical Drawing and shows the lid position and the flat areas suitable for a fitting.

Sizes and versions nearby

The same capacity in black with a slimline shape: the 100 gallon black slimline doorway tank. Smaller, with a factory fitting: the 50 gallon rectangular tank with a 1 inch fitting. Larger: the 250 gallon black doorway tank. Several of these tanks plumbed together in a row give a large volume along a wall without any one of them being too wide for the door.

Shipping and receiving

The tank ships LTL under NMFC 156600-04 from Norwesco's plant in Sheldon, Iowa, or Lancaster, Ohio, whichever is nearer, 48 by 13 by 43 inches on the truck at 50 lb, light enough for one person to carry in. The listed price is before freight; the freight cost estimator gives the lane cost to your ZIP. At the tailgate, check the part number against 43311 on the bill of lading and look at the corners for transit damage. Fit your outlet, fill with water the first time, and let it stand a day on a dry floor before you trust the fitting.
