Why a sphere, and where it goes

A sphere holds the most liquid for the least wall, and its height and width are nearly the same, so it fits a bay where a tall vertical tank would hit the ceiling and a wide low tank would take the floor. At 78 inches across it goes through a double door or a roll-up door, and at 86 inches tall it clears a standard garage header. The round base needs a flat, level, continuous pad; a sphere does not sit on a floor the way a flat-bottom tank does, and the base area that carries 9,174 lb of water, and more with a heavy liquid, is small, so our note on sizing a concrete pad for an above ground polyethylene tank is worth reading before anyone pours. White lets you read the level through the wall, but algae grows in stored water left in the sun; shade the tank for long-term water storage outdoors.

Openings and fittings: what to check before you buy

1. The lid. A 16 inch opening on top, the only opening on the tank. It is wide enough to fill from a hose, drop a float or a suction line through, and get a brush inside. Decide now how someone reaches the top of an 86 inch tall tank with curved sides; a short fixed platform beside it is safer than a ladder against a sphere.
2. The outlet. None is listed with this tank. A bulkhead fitting is installed through the wall where you want it; tell us the size and the liquid and we will put the right fitting on the order, or confirm whether this tank ships with one from the plant.
3. The liquid. Check it against polyethylene and keep it under 120 F and 1.9 specific gravity.

Shipping and receiving

The tank ships LTL under NMFC 156600-01 from Norwesco's Hanford, California plant, 78 by 78 by 86 inches and 288 lb. The freight cost estimator gives the lane cost to your ZIP. A sphere rides in blocking on the trailer because it has no flat side, so look at that blocking before the straps come off and check the shell where it rested. Plan the route to the pad first; the width, not the weight, is what makes it awkward. Check the part number against 44347 on the bill of lading, set the tank, fit the outlet, and fill with water the first time before anything else goes in.
