140 Gallon Vertical Liquid Storage Tank

Why the tall one

Buy this tank when floor is scarce and headroom is not: between two machine bases, in a closet or a narrow plant room, beside a boiler, in the corner of a shop where the walkway cannot give up another inch. Twenty-five inches goes through a standard doorway upright, which the wider 140 gallon shapes do not. The height is the number to check: 73 inches plus room above it to get the lid off and a hose in, measured to the lowest duct, light or header over the spot rather than to the ceiling. The lid is above head height for most people, so plan a fill line or a pump, not buckets, and plan a float or a sight line for the level. A tall slim tank wants a level floor more than a squat one; a slab that falls toward a drain leans a 73 inch column enough to see. Full of water it puts about 1170 lb on a 25 inch circle, and a rotationally moulded base bears on everything it touches and nothing else, so it needs a flat, continuous surface under the whole base. What goes in it

Water, liquid fertilizer, wash water and the treatment chemicals that polyethylene handles are the normal loads. Liquids heavier than 1.5 times water need a tank with a higher rating; tell us the liquid and we will point you to one. Keep the contents under 120 F. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 1-1/4 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the side wall. Thread a 1-1/4 inch valve straight in. Dry-fit it so the handle clears the wall, seal the threads, and support the first length of pipe on its own so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware.
2. Lid. An 8 inch threaded vented lid. Wide enough for a hose, a float switch or a small pump inlet; the vent lets air in as the tank drains so the walls are never pulled inward.
3. Reach. With the lid at 73 inches, fit the float and the fill line before the tank is in its corner, while you can still walk round it.
