The Norwesco 500 Gallon Horizontal Elliptical Cradle Tank (SKU N-40369) is a yellow polyethylene tank built to ride in a cradle or skid and haul liquid where you need it. It holds 500 gallons, measures 82 inches long by 57 inches wide by 44 inches high, and weighs 154 pounds empty. The elliptical cross-section keeps the load low and stable in transit, and it carries a 1.5 specific gravity rating, a 1.25-inch outlet, and a 16-inch lid. Norwesco lists it as FDA approved with a maximum contents temperature of 120 F / 48 C. If you are searching for a 500 gallon horizontal Norwesco tank in yellow, this is the elliptical cradle unit.

Will it handle your load

Sizing is where a horizontal haul tank gets people. Full of water, this tank carries roughly 4,170 pounds. At its maximum 1.5 specific gravity rating, contents top out near 6,255 pounds and you must not exceed that ceiling. Your cradle, trailer, skid, and axle rating all have to carry that filled weight, not the 154-pound empty shell. Run your liquid's specific gravity and fill volume through the Tank Sizing Calculator and the Tank Sizing Guide before you commit to a chassis. The 57 x 82 inch footprint tells you the mounting bed you need.

Chemical compatibility

This is a polyethylene tank (resin listed as HDLPE?) with a 1.5 specific gravity rating. Because the resin carries a question mark, confirm HDLPE versus XLPE with us before you put any chemical in it. Per the Snyder Industries OEM chemical resistance chart, which is concentration- and temperature-specific, this 1.5 SG tank suits chemicals such as acetic acid (60%), aluminum sulfate (50%), calcium chloride (40%), DEF (32.5%), ferrous sulfate (20%), magnesium chloride (30%), sodium carbonate (30%), urea solution (50%), and ozonated water (up to 10 PPM). For a yellow cradle haul tank, DEF and urea solution are the two most common services, and both carry a lower required 1.35 specific gravity than this tank's 1.5 rating, so they sit comfortably within spec. Match fittings and gaskets to the chemical: most of these call for PVC or PP fittings with EPDM gaskets, while DEF wants 316 stainless with EPDM. Always confirm your exact chemical, concentration, temperature, and fitting and gasket materials against the OEM chart and our chemical compatibility resource.

Chemicals that need a heavier tank

Some liquids exceed what a 1.5 SG tank should carry and require a 1.9 specific gravity tank instead — this 1.5 SG unit is not rated for them. That list includes ethylene glycol, ferric chloride (50%), ferric sulfate (60%), hydrochloric acid (37%), hydrofluoric acid (48%), hydrogen peroxide (50%), peracetic acid (30%), phosphoric acid (85%), sodium hypochlorite (under 16.5%), and sulfuric acid (98%), among others. Several of these also change the build: sulfuric acid uniquely requires CPVC fittings with Viton gaskets, and peracetic acid requires 316 stainless fittings with Aflas gaskets — specify these when ordering. If your service is on this list, do not force it into this tank. Call us and we will point you to the correct 1.9 SG unit. See the technical drawing on this page for outlet and fitting placement.
