The Norwesco 55 Gallon Applicator Saddle Tank (SKU N-45193) is a white polyethylene applicator tank built to mount on equipment and haul fertilizer and ag chemistries to the field. It holds 55 gallons, weighs 20 lb empty, and measures 34" long by 23" wide by 27" high on a 23"-diameter saddle footprint that straddles a frame or toolbar. It ships with a 5" lid and a 0.75" outlet, carries a specific-gravity rating of 1.5, and is rated to a maximum service temperature of 120 F (48 C). The polyethylene resin is FDA-approved for potable and ag use.

Will it work for your job?

This is a saddle-style applicator tank, so it is designed to ride on a rig rather than sit as stationary storage. Full of water it runs about 459 lb; at its full 1.5 SG rating the contents can reach roughly 688 lb, so build your mount, straps, and frame to the heavier number, not the water weight. Match your product's density to the 1.5 rating before you fill — a 55-gallon load of a heavier chemistry can far exceed what a 1.0-SG water tank ever sees. If you are sizing a fleet or comparing loads, our Tank Sizing Calculator and Tank Sizing Guide turn gallons into real weight so the mount is spec'd right.

Chemical compatibility

The FDA approval above is a food-contact attribute — it does not certify this tank for industrial acid service, so treat chemical use separately. The body is listed as HDLPE with a question mark, so confirm HDLPE vs XLPE with us before putting it into chemical service. Compatibility below comes from the Snyder Industries OEM chemical-resistance chart and is concentration- and temperature-specific: verify your exact chemical, concentration, temperature, and fitting and gasket materials against the chart before you commit.

This 1.5-SG body handles acetic acid (60%, PP/PVC, EPDM), aluminum sulfate (50%, PVC/EPDM), calcium chloride (40%, PVC/EPDM), ferrous sulfate (20%, PVC/EPDM), magnesium chloride (30%, PVC/EPDM), sodium carbonate (30%, PVC/EPDM), and ozonated water (up to 10 PPM, PVC/EPDM). For fleets hauling DEF (32.5%, 316SS/EPDM) or urea solution (50%, PP/PVC, EPDM), the chart calls for only a 1.35-SG tank — this 1.5 body over-satisfies that with headroom to spare. Note the gasket callouts: EPDM is specified for nearly all of these, and the wrong elastomer is a common failure point.

Some chemistries need a heavier 1.9-SG tank than this one, and several also escalate the fitting or gasket. Hydrochloric acid (37%), phosphoric acid (85%), hydrogen peroxide (50%), and sodium hypochlorite require Viton gaskets; sulfuric acid (98%) needs CPVC fittings with Viton; and peracetic acid (30%) needs 316SS fittings with an Aflas gasket. Ethylene glycol, ferric chloride, ferric sulfate, hydrofluoric acid, potassium hydroxide, sodium bisulfite, zinc orthophosphate, and roughly a dozen others also fall outside this 1.5 rating — do not run any of them in this body. Check each chemical page and our chemical compatibility tool for the concentration- and temperature-specific detail.

The mistake to avoid

The most common error on an applicator saddle tank is treating the SG rating as decoration. A 1.5-SG rating means the wall is built for up to about 688 lb of contents — but it does not upgrade your fittings or gaskets, and it does not extend to the 1.9-SG chemistries above. Confirm resin (HDLPE vs XLPE), match your fitting and gasket to the chart, and respect the 120 F ceiling if your product runs warm. Review the technical drawing on this page for the outlet and lid layout before you plumb it.
